best-dressed at the 54th Grammy Awards

Looks like we have Lady Gaga to thank for inspiring celebs to dress like it’s Halloween on the red carpet. The 2012 Grammy’s were filled with some outlandish attire, but we were still able to narrow it down the 10 best dressed.

Carrie Underwood was glowing in this intricate, open-back gown.  With her swept-back blonde hair and stunning blue eyes, she outshone everyone on the red carpet.

Adele Stayed true to her classic style by rocking the retro cat eye with a gorgeous vintage style Armani gown. She arrived at the red carpet already a winner!

Hilary Scott wore this gorgeously draped gown that really flattered her figure. Her long sleek locks pulled this entire look together. Oh yeah, and her makeup? All tarte.

Julianne Hough chose this exotic black strapless gown and kept her hair and makeup simple, balancing out her entire look.

Kelly Osborne, infamous for her daring dress choices, looked chic and elegant in this one shoulder Grecian-influenced  gown. And her soft purple locks looked beautiful — Katy Perry, take notes!

Kelly Rowland knows she has an amazing figure, and in this gown so does everyone else! She chose a dress that really complimented her shape, but still looked lovely and elegant.

I usually don’t choose Paris Hilton as a best dressed candidate, but she really looked gorgeous last night. She shockingly chose a tasteful and sophisticated gown. Well done, Ms. Hilton!

Rihanna collaborated with Armani to design this  risqué little number. She definitely could have done something else with her hair, but the dress was perfect.

Jane Seymour kept it simple in this fitted, gold gown. She looks amazing, while still dressing for her age and maintaining her sexy appeal.

  Honorable Mention

Katy Perry always knows how to stand out and make a statement. Despite her blue hair her blue gown and makeup were done up to perfection.

Downton Abbey inspired style

Dan Stevens and Michelle Dockery in Downton Abbey

With Downton Abbey having just returned for season two and picked up a handful of awards at the Globes, we thought we’d check it out and see what the hype was all about — and we’re glad we did! The show is not only jam-packed with torrid love affairs, quick British wit, and dashing uniformed gentlemen –  there’s also the clothes. Oh, the clothes.

Set in an era where everyone dresses for dinner, the assortment of outfits in every episode is to die for: painstakingly tailored marvels that look simultaneously refined and glamorous. From beaded evening gowns to fitted ankle-length riding coats, we never knew that conservative twenties Britain could be so sexy.

We’ve found a few current pieces that flawlessly capture the essence of DA style, with just enough contemporary flare. Throw any of these on to instantly amp up your wardrobe’s vintage romance factor.

This mini-dress radiates retro-chic through elegant jewel tones, delicate lace, and structured shoulders.

What’s prettier than sheer black lace? The unique draping and scalloped neckline makes this Tadashi Shoji dress both romantic and modern.

Nothing says “twenties” like a beaded flapper frock. This pleated Sue Wong version is a less obvious, more modern iteration on the classic style.

Top any outfit off with a lovely tweed coat (the heart of a true British wardrobe) for an instant injection of ladylike chic.

But remember tartelettes, as with any costume-inspired look, the key to avoiding looking like an extra is toning down the period-piece drama with some modern twists. Balance these outfits with sky-high peep-toes, loose hair, and a fresh face (try our Amazonian clay 12-hour full coverage foundation and a bright LipSurgence™ lip tint) and you’ll be good to go!

The Details: SAAKO Scarves. Handmade in Barcelona, these incredible pieces are edgy, trendy and currently at the top of my fall fashion accessory list.

The Low Down: Design geniuses Ines Brito and Joana Gouveia began experimenting with jersey in 1989, turning the material into trendy neckwear. With ‘reuse’ as their creative philosophy, they produced earthy and vibrant scarves from recycled fabrics.

What’s to Love: SAAKO scarves are extremely comfortable, affordable, and add a bohemian edge to any look, making them a fantastic year-round addition to your closet. Plus, they also make great gifts!

Summer Cuts!

We tend to turn to Hollywood for fashion advice and the latest trends. So, why not trust them to try haircuts and styles they’ve previously rocked?  From Blake to Emma and all those lovely styles in between, there’s no reason to take on the rest of the summer with the same ole hair style you dawned last season. Get wild and edgy with a pixie cut like Miss Watson or try a short bob with a beachy-wave like Kiera Knightly. For those of you tartelettes who can’t part with your long locks, try an easy style like Vanessa Hudgens; simple, long and straight. You can also go “au natural” like Blake Lively and flaunt your endless, wavy mane.  Whatever style you choose— wear it with confidence and you’ll be sure to turn heads.

What hair style are you embracing or thinking of trying this August?

Party Dresses

Work party, family gathering, significant other’s cocktail party, Chrismukkah bash, New Year’s…heck, this time of year I’ll use any excuse to don a party dress. Holiday soirees are the perfect reason to add a little extra sparkle to your wardrobe.  There’s something about these minis that make an evening feel extra festive. While your go-to LBD is perfect for any of these occasions; I say the dresses above will make you stand out in the crowd. If you don’t live in the frigid north of this country (I’m jealous) wear these with  bare legs and a closed-toe shoe. As for the rest of us, I recommend paring it with opaque black tight—super polished & trendy (and warm).  Finish your look with a fiery lip tint & un-fussy hair; you’ll look gorg! Happy holidays!

Trend Alert!

New York city shoppers are actually itching NOT to shop! Yes it’s true. This little bed bug epidemic happening at some of my favorite retailers is actually keeping my wallet padded in what would typically be my favorite season to splurge. Thanks to cyber space, I can still turn to my favorite sites and celebs for a little inspiration on what’s new & noteworthy this fall.

When I think of tribal, I typically think of summer ikat prints,  fab shoes & satchels. Well, that has changed this season. Knowing that one of my favorite effortless fashionistas, Blake Lively, recently stocked up on natural cheek stain in sunkissed; I took some time to check up on her September wardrobe choices as she promotes her new flick, The Town.  My fave…this fully beaded Marchesa tribal mini dress. The vibrant yellow and sapphire are nothing short of amazing and when it comes to fashion, Blake is spot-on. Tribal for cocktail hour? If it looks anything like this then yes, please!

Blake’s not the only trendsetter. My favorite downtown retailer, LF, just released their fall look book and it seems they too are feeling the tribal vibe for fall. The relaxed, hooded cardigan from their shoot is on the right. I’m loving the muted rustic colors for fall & their twist on a Navajo blanket. NY is a bit cold for shorts; so I would pair this with my favorite skinnies, a House of Harlow 1960 tribal cuff & Blake’s beauty secrets ;)

Burberry Prorsum: Runway to Reality

There’s no doubt that fall marks the new year in the fashion calendar. That being said my absolute favorite fall investment is a killer piece of outerwear. And this season you don’t have to break the bank to make a statement.

With so many options to choose from—a classic camel coat, military-inspired pea, faux fur vest or metallic trench—who other to turn to than Chris Bailey of Burberry Prorsum for spot-on outerwear perfection. For fall Burberry featured the most incredible pieces (top three across) and what I think makes them so desirable is that they’re all “wear-anywhere-with-anything”!  Whether you’re rocking your go-to skinnies, heading to a business meeting or off to a party in your black mini dress, you can wear the same piece of outerwear. The versatility of these pieces allow them to look polished or perhaps hipster, day or night, and the list goes on… But back to reality, all of our garb can’t be straight off the runway. So, I did a little digging and found great alternatives to those amazing statements at a fraction of the price.

Love the Burberry Prorsum navy, double-breasted, military coat with that fabulous fit and gold button detail? Try the Marc by Marc Jacobs Gemini Melton or Milly Bastille coat. If you prefer the more rugged look of Prorsum’s shearling aviator with an oversized funnel collar, then fake it with Aqua’s faux-shearling motorcycle or Plastic Island’s Stonehenge. And, as if you could resist the teddy-bear look and over-sized proportions of that final look on the far right. No worries, both  Alex + Olivia’s metallic faux and Cynthia Steffe’s Eliza do the same trick.  Of course, we’d all like to spend the big bucks; however, we need to decide which investments are worth it. Remember: Don’t empty your pockets on a piece you won’t wear a million times over ;)

Favorite Back to School Looks

As summer comes to an end, it’s time for me to start thinking about the coming school year. This includes getting together all of my favorite fall fashion picks. After browsing through recent magazines, I’m excited to say that I can still use some of my go-to trends from previous years like the classic blazer.  I bought mine two years ago to complete my preppy college girl look, and I know I will continue to wear it for the rest of my life! Both my Mother AND Grandmother own one. It’s a great investment!  To make my “blazer adorned” outfit age-appropriate, I pair it with skinny jeans, statement heels, and tons of jewelry—chunky bracelets, long necklaces, and big pearl earrings. I think these feminine touches balance out the masculine feel. I love my blazer because not only does it prove to stand the test of time, but it can also be worn in ANY situation like casual shopping, business meetings, and a night out on the town, etc. It’s basically the best piece in my closet!

As for my beauty picks this fall, I love soft, natural eyes with a statement lip. It’s amazing how defined lips can pull your whole look together. tarte has some great lip selections for the autumn. The new LipSurgence™ matte lip stains come in fashionably-chic colors.  As I tend to be a pink-loving girl, I would choose tarte’s LipSurgence™ natural matte lip stain in lively, which is a vivid pink. Some other great choices are fiery (red) and envy (a deep berry color).  To accompany my bold lip, I’d create a natural eye with tarte’s 12-hour lock and roll eye shadow in either sandstone or rose gold. Then I’d layer on lots of lights, camera, lashes! 4-in-1 natural mascara! To complete my look I would add a subtle touch of color with tarte’s natural cheek stain in tipsy. And voila!  A natural and stylish look for fall.

Hope you agree. Have a great fall!

Get the Look!

This week celebrity makeup artist Susan Houser created the look for Issa’s Resort Collection using tarte goodies! The end result was AMAZING! Her go-to products were eye couture day-to-night palette (deep shimmery bronze & copper), eyeQuatic (turquoise & citrine), and natural cheek stain in sunkissed. Re-create this look for a night out–don’t forget a swipe of mascara and a dab of gloss on your pout! Perfectly stunning.
