“Confessions of a “Glamorous” Author — and A Chance to Win an Autographed Book!”

A few years ago, just after my second novel came out, I agreed to meet with an aspiring writer who wanted to pick my brain. I walked inside the restaurant to find her regarding me with a puzzled expression.

“Was that you that just pulled up?” she asked, glancing outside at my car.

“Um, yes,” I replied.

“But . . . what is that?”

“My car? A Toyota Corolla.”

She looked positively baffled. “But why are you driving it?” she asked after a pause. “Aren’t you, like, a millionaire?”

Er . . . no.

Yes, I have six novels out. Yes, they’ve been translated into numerous languages. And yes, I do okay.

But the truth is, I count myself lucky just to be able to make a living by writing. Like most novelists, my bank account doesn’t quite resemble that of J.K. Rowling or Dan Brown!

People assume that being an author is a glamorous job too – and often it is. I’ve been to Super Bowls, appeared on numerous national TV shows and have hung with many celebs. On the other hand, my “office” is my tiny kitchen nook, where I watch Law & Order reruns while emailing. Not so glam!

I’m also a normal girl on a budget – which is a weird predicament to be in when I’m preparing for a national TV appearance, without the funds to hire a professional makeup artist.

That’s why I’m so thankful for Tarte. Everything in the natural line is simple to use and looks great. It has saved me time and time again!

From novelist (and certified Tarte-aholic) Kristin Harmel, the author of six books, including Italian for Beginners and After

My name is Kristin . . . and I am a Tarte-aholic.

I have a drawer full of cheek stains, double-ended lip glosses, and cleverly named products such as Smooth Operator, Clean Slate and Lock & Roll.

I am endlessly drawn to the Tarte display at Sephora. I giggle at the lip gloss names. I try on the different cheek stains. And on one recent trip, I even found myself stopping a startled stranger and gushing about how great Tarte is. That’s the day I knew for sure that I had a problem.

I was trying to kick the habit, really I was. And then Candace and Kristin from Tarte asked if I wanted to blog for Tarte this month. Now, here I am, more addicted than ever! I fear the cycle will never end!

I first met the Tarte gals when I wrote a magazine article about Tarte founder Maureen Kelly in 2006. It was the kindness of everyone associated with Tarte that drew me in initially, but I truly became a devotee once I started using the products. Now, here I am, happily addicted!

I’m looking forward to chatting with you this month! I’ll tell you all about my novels – and how I use Tarte to get ready for my TV appearances – next week. But in the meantime, I’ll leave you with a list of the Tarte products currently in my makeup bag!

Getting into Character with Stephanie Lemelin (part 2)

Hey everyone! So as promised in my last post, I am bringing you a second character look I use for auditions and in real life. This edgy, rocker look can be created with hard or soft edges, depending I guess on what story you want to tell (beginning of the night vs. morning after, anyone? ha!) I like the hard lines for characters that are cool and confident, gals who tell it like it is, sistah (cue Boston adolescence)– and then the softer, dustier look for nights out in Los Angeles (on rare occasions I actually hit up the Hollywood scene, it’s true.) Either way, you can easily recreate this look at home (trust me, if I can, you can) by just following the how-to below.  Be sure to keep me and the tarte girls posted on how yours turn-out through comments below… we really love reading them! Fun, fun ;)

Actress Stephanie Lemelin’s Pilot Season Regimen

Hello! I’m very excited to be one of the first guest bloggers here on the tarte website, since I am a true believer/avid-user of these products. Admittedly, when it comes to make-up, hair, and most things fashion-related, I am not exactly a girlie-girl by nature, and often way behind the curve. However, I make my living as an actress, and these things go hand-in-hand. While it’s true there are professional make-up, hair, and wardrobe stylists on set once you’ve been cast in a role, unfortunately there aren’t any at my house before I go on auditions. And I must go on a lot of auditions before I actually get any parts! So, the step-by-step instructions that come with the easy-to-use (and adorably packaged!) tarte products have been extremely helpful! Whether I use them to help bring to life the fresh-faced, teen girl next door (p.s. I’m 30), or the evil vixen who’s out to steal your boyfriend (ummm, hello, I’m married and we’ve been together 7 years now), I rely heavily on looks I learned right here to help morph myself externally and get into character. Anyway I’m going to bring you several looks I use on the outside, to help inspire theattitude on the inside in a fun three part blog series. These characters range from the wild child, to the rocker chick, to the tomboy, to the conservative young professional… Enjoy! Oh, and because these were being publicly shared, I broke down and got some help from a pro– Thanks Coco! But you really can do these at home ;)

Gift Etiquette 101—How to Accept Graciously.

Since our 2009 treasure chest palette is sold out at Sephora, we’ve decided to run a contest on our Facebook page for a chance to win this gem of a palette. That said our fans are leaving comments that have me rolling on the floor laughing. Why, you ask? Well, to enter you must share the worst gift you’ve ever received & in return we’ll give one of you a gift you want! From hot dog pokers to a wheel of baby Gouda cheese, this really got me thinking. How do you react to such silly and ridiculous presents? How do you hold-up a true poker face while un-wrapping a terrible gift?!

When accepting a gift it’s always important to remain thankful. In this awkward moment try your best to uphold your manners—no glimpse of shock or horror. Stay classy. After asking around for some tips from some true masters of animated appreciation I have narrowed it down to 3 easy steps:

Step 1: Know your audience. Show your appreciation and make it look real, even if you feel your taste is way better.

Step 2: The wrong expression can hurt the feelings of the giver. Although you can’t seem to come to any conclusion as to why they bought this for you, give them the benefit of the doubt (they bought this picturing your excitement). So be just that, surprised and excited.

Step 3: Always smile & always say thank you. Even ask where they got such a “unique & thoughtful” gift (in your head you can picture yourself at the return counter).

Now, I know these may be easier said than done. Just remember, it’s the season of generosity—it can always be worse.

Gift Guide–Gifts that Give Back!

This holiday season make a change—gift beyond your family & friends. Look for products that donate a portion (or all) of proceeds to a worthy cause. I’m trying to make a conscious effort to choose items that help make it merry for everyone! What’s that saying again? Oh yes, “Tis better to give than receive.” Here are some ideas to get you started!

- The FEED 3 Bear is made from 100% plush organic cotton and natural burlap. This snuggle buddy is perfect for your little one and like all FEED products—it’s their goal to sell as many FEED 3 bears as possible to FEED and educate the world’s 400 million hungry children. “Nut,” the FEED 3 bear, will provide Plumpy’Nut® for 3 children through Industrial Revelation.
- tarte’s t5™ super fruit complex is found in many products including our cult fave, natural cheek stain. With the purchase of any tarte product containing t5™, tarte will donate proceeds to the Sustainable Amazon Partnership (SAP)—helping to preserve the Amazon Rainforest through forest stewardship, improved living conditions and educational opportunities for communities in Brazil.
- The Retro Green Scooter is a sleek ride for any 3-to-5 year old & proceeds from every purchase are donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
- For the stylista, the ‘Nana’ ring from H.E.L.P’s Panthera Collection is a generous gift that benefits nutritional education in Malawi.
- My personal favorite is from Heart U Back. Their cord adjustable bracelet (think very Links of London) comes in a ton of colors (I picked up red) and mixes in perfect with the rest of your stackables. The best part, Heart U Back promises $125,000 in proceeds to the ASPCA.

NYFW Spring 2010—tarte for Hayden-Harnett!

New York Fashion Week is in full swing and the tartelettes are happy to grant you a ‘backstage pass’ to Hayden-Harnett’s “Lava Fields of Love” presentation! Inspired by a nomadic journey through lava fields and desert landscapes; the creative talents behind the Brooklyn label created a warm, natural feeling collection with hints of pop color. tarte’s artistry team used these concepts to create a flawless makeup look. Think: warm complexion with a strong, geometric brow and barely there lips. You can easily re-create the look for this fall, but be sure to avoid looking baked! Here’s a tip from lead tarte artist Laura McGuire, “…a bronzing powder with gold undertones (park ave princess) was used directly on the apples of the cheeks, and then our natural tipsy cheek stain was used on top for an extra healthy, warm glow.” Check out our fashion week collection page to snag some of the products used! http://www.tartecosmetics.com/tarte-shop-fashion-week-spring2010

We’re not in Kansas anymore…

Figuring out what you want to do with your life is one of the hardest taskes in life. Trying to make a name for yourself without getting sued or arrested can be hard these days, I should know I’m an intern. But even harder than figuring out your purpose in life is bathing suit shopping.
Every girl hates that time of year when she has to come to the realization that the fur coat (so to speak) needs to come off. It’s a time of year when you suddenly hate every model in any swimsuit ad you see. You find yourself dreading watching the weather report and hoping for some magical weather god that won’t take the temperature above 70 degrees until you’re ready. Some of us stop talking to friends we’ve known for years for fear of receiving an invite to the dreaded beach. You see the girls who are way too tan for it to be May, people wearing two pieces that should be wearing one pieces, and the guys that think the beach is a place for professional football.
Besides already being self-conscious about yourself, some of us can’t help but wonder if we chose the right bathing suit for the summer. You have the traditional one piece that is always safe but sometimes not very flattering; the perfect sexy one piece that only one girl on the beach is ever wearing (and you hate her for that); the modest two piece that is acceptable to wear while meeting any future mother or father-in-laws; the more revealing two piece boy short, hip hugger, low-rise, high-rise, string laiden, eye catching bikini that is sure to get a number and an invite to dinner; and the infamous thong bikini that should only be worn in non-English speaking countries.
Personally I choose the more revealing two piece that is sure to get a cell number and a free dinner (hey, a girl’s gotta eat). The choice is up to you ladies but just remember that it’s past Memorial Day A.K.A. you have less than 2 weeks to get your winter butts into sexy bikini body shape. Enjoy the treadmill (oh and grab a tube of tarte’s celufight to get the party started).

Southern Hospitality

Many of us channeled our inner debutante for the Kentucky Derby with fancy hats and dresses (or maybe pretended to do so in our living rooms). Now, it’s time for a little Southern charm makeover with the pros from tarte and Sephora! Yes ma’am, we said it. “Southern Belles: Louisville,” SOAPnet’s new original reality TV series about five lovely ladies, premieres on May 21 – and we’re celebrating it this weekend Friday–Saturday, May 15–16, 12pm–6pm at 3 Sephora locations!

And if you’re lucky enough to live below the Mason-Dixon (Louisville), then you have a chance to meet the cast! So come out and get spoiled in true Southern Belle fashion—I’ll be at the NYC location. Hope to see y’all there!
