Summer is the perfect time of year to lighten up and have fun with your beauty routine. However, straying from your neutrals and incorporating color can be a bit scary. That’s why I’d suggest you start simple and try lilac. This ultra-girly hue compliments all eye shades, brightens the whites of your eyes and even neutralizes any yellowness in the lids. Not to mention you’ll be on trend—the Spring & Resort Runway Shows featured lots of lilac-brushed lids.
Sure, maybe here at tarte we’re a bit biased to our signature color, but what’s not to love?! All of the looks above are a bit romantic, appear effortless in the day against sunkissed skin & can carry you into the night with some added eyeliner. I especially love the way the shadow is swept along the bottom lash line. Achieving this look is quite easy. You can use a powder and wet your shadow brush to get a more concentrated pigment on the lid and then lightly highlight the brow bone. Keep in mind the summer time poses a challenge, think sticky heat and sweat: gross. So, I personally opt for lock & roll 12-hour eyeshadow in amethyst. This cream/powder double-ended wand is 100% budge-proof and creaseproof; I promise your shadow won’t be migrating anywhere (even if you take a plunge in the pool). Simply swipe the cream along your lid and, if you like, under your lash line. Using the loose powder side, set the cream by using the rollerball applicator and sweep the powder up onto your brow bone. If you need to blend go ahead and use your fingers. Top with a coat of jet black, waterproof mascara!
So ladies, while your out celebrating the Fourth of July this weekend, let’s all have a little fun with lilac.
My name is Kate. I’m a rising junior at Boston College and I also happen to be the new tarte PR intern, doing my best to dive into this glamorous world. I am soooo excited to be working at such a great, green company, not to mention giddy over the access to all the fab makeup!
Recently, I have tried out some of tarte’s newer products, and I must say, as a “college girl,” many of these products are totally ideal. For instance, as I think many college students can relate, the party scene at school can get overcrowded, hot, and sweaty. This is why I am in love with tarte’s new summer collection of waterproof products, perfect for girls like us! So I have decided to put together a list of beauty products, hair and nails included, that are particularly alluring to a beauty addict in the midst of her education.
First off are my fave waterproof products. lights, camera, splashes! and matte waterproof park ave princess. I for one love to look bronze, but don’t want brown streaks of sweat rolling down my face whether I’m stressing in the library, lounging on the campus green or at a party. PAP is the perfect, sweat resilient bronzer. Next in the bag I would include tarte’s cheek stain, in tipsy, and LipSurgence™ natural lip stain (in charmed). Again, great long staying products, as well as easy and quick to use– I’m a girl on the go!
Now we can’t forget about the hair. I have long fine wavy hair, that I like best when straight, however it’s hard to keep it that way when engulfed in humidity. To keep my hair in place, I have come to turn to L’Oreal Elnett Extra Strong hold hair spray. It gets the job done, but doesn’t make my hair hard or crunchy. I’m also a fan of chi volume boost. I loooove volume and this really boosts my roots! Now for the nails. As I’m sure many of you have heard, OPI has a new gel polish that I guarantee will last over a month without a chip. I know I don’t have the time or money during school to get a manicure every week (because that’s how long a manicure lasts), so this gel formula is the perfect solution!
Well that’s it for the “college girl’s” beauty bag must haves. Please share any additions and I’ll be back with another post next week!
The NY temps are hitting 90 degrees today and if you remember 5th grade science NYC suffers from a little dilemma known as heat island effect. Unfortunately, our fabulous 13 mile stretch hardly resembles the summer island hot spots we day dream of. Thankfully, Henri Bendel has come to our rescue and these days the luxe isle of Capri is only a hop, skip and jump down 5th avenue!
Capri is synonymous with the Piazzetta, the Grotta Azzura (blue grotto) and traditional sandal making. This summer you can be living ‘la dolce vita’ while lounging on a downtown rooftop with Tuccia Di Capri. This custom sandal company was started by models-turned-entrepreneurs, Tove Nord and Terri Coleman. Made in traditional Capri fashion, they are now offering the work of their chic cobblers at a featured shop in Henri Bendel! In just 1 hour you can choose the look (flat, medium wedge, high wedge), style (named after ultra-glam icons who often sported their own custom sandals around the island), and embellishments! The artisans then work their magic and just like that you have made-to-measure perfection.
I hope all of you NY fashionistas head out and embrace the Italian tradition; I know I will. I would love for you to share pics of your pair with us!
Well have no fear, my dears because Mimi is here— to give you the know-how to picking the chicest denim gear you’ll need from June on…
Before I purchased my denim shirt (Target little boys dept—$9.99!), I thought cutoff shorts were the holy grail of jeans. Boy, was I wrong! My denim button-up has made appearances at the year’s most major holidays—Thanksgiving, Christmas and Memorial Day— and waltzes into the workplace at least once a week. My key to keeping it fresh…well, beyond Frebreze? Rocking it dressy or casual with posh panache! One week it’s tucked into khaki cropped trousers, and the next its doing the wild thing on top of a leopard mini. J.Crew has awesome styles, but if you wanna save a buck (or 80), hit up the little boys section.
If you’re a little hesitant to wear denim anywhere but on your derriere, no worries—there are plenty of accessories that pay wonderful homage to Levi’s love. I dare you to not die for the Tory Burch Delaney satchel. Nothing says Hot American Summer like dark denim and cherry red! And for the gal who’s rockerchic, I present you American Retro’s crazzzzycool denim studded wedge. Now that’s a mouthful of trends! For our femme fatale, Eugenia Kim’s denim rosette headband is the headgear to highlight summer waves.
I’m not much of a jeans person… “Post on denim?!?!?! Mimi, you’re confused, honey!” Allow me to explain— while I own gobs of jeans, they are never my go-to-gear. Friends and family literally gasp when I wear the stuff! But when it comes to cutoff jean shorts—wooooo weeee, I’m in love. I was wearin’ them indaclub loooong before Erin Wassson was rockin’ her pair after hours. And since that fateful Miami night, I’ve been doing my Daisy Duke dance non-stop. White tee? DUH! Blazer+pumps? Of course! Button-down and pumps? You better believe. For any skeptic thinking denim shorts reek of down on the farm, pair them with sleek accessories for a look that is totally urban chic!
I LOATHE denim skirts- let me repeat- LOATHE! My galpals have diagnosed it as an irrational dislike, but when I see those denim minis with bedazzled back pockets and strings hanging from the hem…I lose it, and with good reason! There is a much more stylish option for any dressy denim inquiries…and it’s all in the name! I am in love with the feminine pleats of this Arden B. version. Add a few of Mimi’s haute pink picks from last week’s post and you will be SummerStylin! And “if I were a rich girl…” I would snap up this Herve Leger sexy style in a second!
All right, tartelettes, dump the dull denim and shake it up with Mimi’s picks! It’s the best jean junk you’ll ever own swear!
On Tuesday night tarte had the honor of being a part of Fashion Delivers’ Pay It Fashion Forward event. If you haven’t heard of Fashion Delivers, it is a non-profit charitable foundation that was created to help Hurricane Katrina victims. Fashion Deliver’s mission is to mobilize the fashion community to reach out and affect the world through their donations. These donations provide relief and dignity to women, men, families and survivors of natural disasters. Since Katrina the organization has continued its admirable philanthropy and the fashion community has donated over $65 million dollars to natural disaster victims. Once a year Fashion Delivers host a Pay It Fashion Forward event to raise money for the freight costs for the delivery of goods.
This year Fashion Delivers concentrated its efforts on Haiti relief. Hosted by HBO stars Brian Greenberg and Emmanuelle Chriqui, Pay It Fashion Forward honored industry leaders who have had positive influences on their communities and environment at the Lucky Strike lanes in NYC. One of the event sponsors,
Forever21, was kind enough to bring tarte’s artistry team on board to create the beauty looks for the fashion show, which took place during the event. The tarte team had a blast and loved every second of being part of such a great cause. All of the event proceeds will subsidize the shipping costs of the $25 million dollars worth of product collected for Haiti!
We hope you enjoy our pictures & if you are in the NYC area next year you can purchase tickets for the event at Fashion Deliver’s website (http://www.fashiondelivers.org/). Please check out our video on tarte TV for clips from the fun-filled evening!
Before I even started flipping through the pages of July’s Essence magazine, I was mesmerized by the issue’s cover girl: the beautiful Jada Pinkett Smith. Jada’s makeup looks absolutely flawless and it’s a great day & night look. Her immaculate complexion & lightly glossed lips really make her indigo cat-eyes pop right off the page. I’ll admit blue liner is not something I would typically reach for, but this oceanic hue is a hot summer trend that brightens the white’s of your eyes on a whole new level! It’s actually super simple to replicate with a cream liner. My fave is tarte’s emphasEYES™ clay shadow/liner in indigo (Essence gave its nod of approval as well, because it’s featured in plum on page 30 of this issue!); it even comes with the appropriate brush for the perfect application!
Young Hollywood hit the Red Carpet Sunday night for MTV’s 2010 Movie Awards. As usual some over-the-top looks had me a little puzzled, but; hey, I speak fashion and love a good risk-taker any day. After browsing through all of the pics from the night, I couldn’t help but notice how much I appreciate the “natural beauty” look. With sunkissed skin, perfectly lined eyes & barely-there lips, Victoria Justice, Whitney Port and Jessica Biel all rocked this look. It’s all about complimenting your best features. Their easy blow-outs added a finishing touch to an overall sexy summer look. With pre-show events, weather conditions, paparazzi, the actual show and the after parties, these ladies needed their makeup to stand up to the test of time. So, here is where I come in with some useful info. I promise: you can get this look with just three products. It’s sure to last you from morning to night… and then some. Start by applying park ave princess matte waterproof bronzer to temples, cheeks, jawline and nose. Line eyes with emphasEYES™ clay shadow/liner in brown; use the included brush to smudge to your desire. Pucker up with rise & shine natural lip stain and plumping gloss in nude. That’s it! Go ahead and give it a whirl, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Pink went through some pretty tough stuff in the early 2000s. It was forced onto everything from flippy skirts (circa 2003: I owned about twelve), monogrammed tees and plenty of unsuspecting lapdogs (Paris Hilton, much?)
Well thanks to M.Kors Fall 2009 and some fashion-forward beauty brands, the hue has chicly joined us in 2010…but with a seriously styling makeover. Buh-bye, baby and blush! Hello, hautehot fuschia!
The rose of today is less girly-girl, more womanly wow! While the old hue purrrrred, the new neon roars! Rather than dominating an entire ensemble, it adds a stylish splash to an otherwise basic look. And this summer pink goes pop on every extra from lipstick to pumps, purses to nailpolish!
- Totally dying over this fuschia crossbody bag by Antik Batik. The snakeskin is luxe and the small size won’t weigh you down when the weather gets warm. I would pair this with a crisp white shirt dress for a day of lunch and shopping with the gals!
- I live in a fantasy fashionland where haute pink is a neutral shoe hue…a little crazy, huh? Well I say crazy chic because a pink BCBG pump I purchased last spring has become my go-to going out gear! This Dolce Vita Pela wedge is the perfect pink pop for summer. I’m envisioning endless shorts ensembles!
- I adore Alexis Bittar designs because they are distinct and gorgeous, without the hefty pricetag of other costume jewels. The pyramid stud earrings certainly live up to the Bittar Buzz! Ideal for the gal who wants just a flash of fun!
- Now the beauty banter— swipe tarte’s True Love cheek stain on sunkissed skin for a fab flush. Or pucker up to LipSurgence lip stain in Amused for a pink pout. My go to nail color is Zoya’s Jolene—an adorable hot pink that is “Hot Child in the City,” rather than “Hot Child on the Playground!”
- I know everybody and their mom/dog/cousin/granny is rockin Ray-bans, but nearly no one is wearing them in rose! I am huge fan of aviators, and this femme hue balances the tough Top Gun shape.
So tartelettes, whether you go full out or just add a dash—this summer think pink!
Two weeks ago I ran my first half-marathon in 2 hours 1min 53sec (see earlier post to get more background)! We started in Prospect Park in Brooklyn and ended in Coney Island. It felt great mentally and physically to accomplish such a long run. As a beginner runner, I tried to read up on all the tips & tricks. Now, after finishing my first race I’d love to share some of my thoughts:
- Dress appropriately: I was sure to check the weather the night before. I went with some Nike dri-fit capris & tank. It was a bit chilly in the morning, but by mile 2 I was perfect.
- Start slow: This was a harder rule for me to follow, but I had my good friend Erika to keep me in check. You automatically want to run fast, but it’s best to start slow and build your speed. You can always sprint at the end.
- Hydrate: I’m constantly forcing myself to hydrate. I’m not one of those people that drink lots of water, but I’ve been getting much better at it! Throughout the race, you’ll find stations of water and Gatorade. Be sure to take advantage of them! Some people think that it will take time off their numbers, but in the end it really helps! Your body will thank you for it. I had my first Gatorade at mile 4 and then pretty much continued to do so every other mile.
- Music: My running mix really got me through the run—from Jay Z’s Empire State of Mind to Passion Pit’s Sleepyhead and MGMT’s Kids, I was able to motivate with music!
- Accessories: What did I really need? To be honest aside from my iPod, the only other items I carried in my pants were tarte’s 24/7 lip sheer and Powerbar gel to take at mile 6. Other than that I checked everything else I had with me.
- Support system: For this race, I was lucky to run with Erika and my husband Greg was there to cheer us on. I’m also constantly asking my dear friend Jay for advice, too.
As for challenges I personally faced during my run—waking up at 5am for a 7am race! Other than that I had some soreness, but ice and some advil did the trick. Next up: NYC marathon in October!!
As many of you know, tarte is a natural brand that formulates with high-performance natural ™ ingredients. That being said I wanted to provide some more insight on what we mean when we talk about these HPN ingredients. Maureen Kelly (the Creator & CEO) scours the earth for nature’s secrets that will clinically correct your skin (whether it’s wrinkles, fine lines or moisture issues) while helping you look your best! Our newest products contain clay, but not just any clay: Amazonian White Clay! You’re probably wondering: what the heck is that and why should I care?
Amazonian white clay is nature’s most perfect ingredient. It works for ALL skin types. Yes, I said ALL—I know, we didn’t think it existed either! So, today I wanted to share all the deets on what exactly it is/does and why it must be the newest edition to your makeup bag.
While recently vacationing in Brazil (the tarte team is going back June 20!!), Maureen noticed that women of all ages had such flawless skin and healthy complexions. She was on a mission to determine their beauty secret. Enter nature’s most perfect ingredient: Amazonian clay.
A quick eco-history lesson: The Amazon River spans 4,000 miles in length, and as it flows it collects nutrient dense fruit and plant matter. At the most downstream region nutrients are at its highest concentration. At this location tarte extracts the purest clay sediments; and along the River’s edge, we refine the raw clay on-site while in its most active state. By using the sun’s natural heat we solidify the clay into blocks to sustain and protect the nutrient concentration. The clay is then shaved down into a finely-milled powder that can be carefully added to our high-performance natural™ formulas to gently balance and correct any skin concerns while simultaneously stimulating circulation.
So how does this multitasking and total skin balancing clay work for everyone?
- Oily skin: removes surface oil to mattify skin
- Dry skin: hydrates skin reducing the appearance of dryness and flakiness
- For problem/redness/acne skin: helps correct and balance
- Dull skin: improves the appearance of skin clarity and texture
- All skin: Gives skin an overall smooth and even appearance
Well, this was a mouthful but it’s so important to know what your makeup is doing for you. Check out our new for summer 2010 emphasEYES™ clay shadow/liners & get your daily dose of white clay. A bunch of additional clay-packed tarte goodies can be found on our QVC.com page.
