New York city shoppers are actually itching NOT to shop! Yes it’s true. This little bed bug epidemic happening at some of my favorite retailers is actually keeping my wallet padded in what would typically be my favorite season to splurge. Thanks to cyber space, I can still turn to my favorite sites and celebs for a little inspiration on what’s new & noteworthy this fall.
When I think of tribal, I typically think of summer ikat prints, fab shoes & satchels. Well, that has changed this season. Knowing that one of my favorite effortless fashionistas, Blake Lively, recently stocked up on natural cheek stain in sunkissed; I took some time to check up on her September wardrobe choices as she promotes her new flick, The Town. My fave…this fully beaded Marchesa tribal mini dress. The vibrant yellow and sapphire are nothing short of amazing and when it comes to fashion, Blake is spot-on. Tribal for cocktail hour? If it looks anything like this then yes, please!
Blake’s not the only trendsetter. My favorite downtown retailer, LF, just released their fall look book and it seems they too are feeling the tribal vibe for fall. The relaxed, hooded cardigan from their shoot is on the right. I’m loving the muted rustic colors for fall & their twist on a Navajo blanket. NY is a bit cold for shorts; so I would pair this with my favorite skinnies, a House of Harlow 1960 tribal cuff & Blake’s beauty secrets
For Fall 2010. Chanel has released Les Khakis de Chanel; an exclusive nail polish collection consisting of a trio of camo hues. These colors are a twist on the neutral trend that is popping up all over runways this fall. Naturally, we’re obsessed, but definitely not willing to dish out a pricey $25 per polish.
After unsuccessfully scavenging the internet for doppelganger shades, we came to a frightening conclusion—we had to make our own.
We decided to delve into the world of Frankening, the art of mixing polishes, to make your own custom hue. After concocting countless recipes, we’d like to think we’re pretty spot on (bonus: it’s made with “big 3” free green polishes). Eat your heart out Coco!
Want to make your own? Here’s How:
ZOYA nail polishes in:
Non-Acetone Nail Polish Remover
3 empty nail polish bottles
- either recycle from a bottle of nail polish you no longer wear (like we did) or a bottle of topcoat
Step #1: Clean out old nail polish bottles. This can be done by pouring out the excess polish and swirling a small amount of non-acetone nail polish remover around in the bottle until it’s clean.
- Fill the empty bottle half way with Dea. Finish off the bottle with ¼ Pippa and ¼ Envy. Shake!
- Fill Empty bottle half full with Marcella, then 2/6th of Dea. Finish off the final 1/6th with Pippa. Finally, add a small splash of Envy. Shake!
- Fill Empty bottle 1/3 full of Envy, then add another third Gretchen. Split the remaining third between Pippa and Dea. By now your arm is probably falling off, but you must shake!
And there you have it. Enjoy and good luck!

With fall just around the corner, I wanted to update my look for the new fashion season. When I’m in the mood for change, I just do it and don’t think twice. Last weekend on a whim, I decided I’d get a dramatic haircut. So, I chopped off 8 inches! And it feels good (literally)! My hair feels so healthy and I feel rejuvenated and ready for that autumn breeze.
Meanwhile, I wasn’t the only one feeling the need for a new look. Candace went back to her roots. For as long as I’ve known her she had golden blonde hair with light highlights. She’s now a medium blonde with light blonde highlights. She was inspired after seeing a few September magazines, especially the latest Harper’s Bazaar with Jennifer Anniston on the cover.
So we’re sending a little love to our favorite stylists: Antonio, owner Senses NY Salon and Spa & Jackie, stylist at deJensen Salon & Spa in Sea Girt, NJ! Anyone else out there looking to update her look for the fall? Tell us about it—we want to hear/see it!!
There’s no doubt that fall marks the new year in the fashion calendar. That being said my absolute favorite fall investment is a killer piece of outerwear. And this season you don’t have to break the bank to make a statement.
With so many options to choose from—a classic camel coat, military-inspired pea, faux fur vest or metallic trench—who other to turn to than Chris Bailey of Burberry Prorsum for spot-on outerwear perfection. For fall Burberry featured the most incredible pieces (top three across) and what I think makes them so desirable is that they’re all “wear-anywhere-with-anything”! Whether you’re rocking your go-to skinnies, heading to a business meeting or off to a party in your black mini dress, you can wear the same piece of outerwear. The versatility of these pieces allow them to look polished or perhaps hipster, day or night, and the list goes on… But back to reality, all of our garb can’t be straight off the runway. So, I did a little digging and found great alternatives to those amazing statements at a fraction of the price.
Love the Burberry Prorsum navy, double-breasted, military coat with that fabulous fit and gold button detail? Try the Marc by Marc Jacobs Gemini Melton or Milly Bastille coat. If you prefer the more rugged look of Prorsum’s shearling aviator with an oversized funnel collar, then fake it with Aqua’s faux-shearling motorcycle or Plastic Island’s Stonehenge. And, as if you could resist the teddy-bear look and over-sized proportions of that final look on the far right. No worries, both Alex + Olivia’s metallic faux and Cynthia Steffe’s Eliza do the same trick. Of course, we’d all like to spend the big bucks; however, we need to decide which investments are worth it. Remember: Don’t empty your pockets on a piece you won’t wear a million times over
Well, with my Misery-esque obsession completely out there, let’s get started on my Fall lust list. I know the Spring and Summer editions claimed to be the lust lists of the year, but lemme let you in on a little something—I just did that to make those lowly months feel better. Poor May, such sad July. Autumn is the only season that steals my heart time and time again.
Shakira “She-Wolf” With its sexy howl and 70s disco beat, the title track from Shakira’s fourth English-speaking album has been playing in my head, heart and ipod non-stop since August. And have you seen Ms. “Hips Don’t Lie” in the video? I’ve been on the Shake-it-like-Shakira workout plan since. The album drops Oct 13, and I cannot wait to let this Chic-Wolf out of the closet.
KNEEd ‘Em, Want ‘Em, Gottahave ‘Em Yep, you guessed it, the next item on my lust list is over-the-knee boots. You can barely walk down the street these days without hearing someone deliriously wishing, pining, longing for this Pretty Woman standard. Ok, so maybe only in my fashion fantasyland, but you get my point. Sexy thigh-high boots are everywhere—mags, runways and on the legs of the most stylish ladies. I’ve been coveting this Candela pair for months, but Saks and I are still in negotiations over that $500 price-tag. In the meantime, I’ll just pick up the more affordable, but equally chic “Vamp” style by Free People. And chicsters, these boots are made for much more than just walking.
Prps Leather Cape Jacket We all know I can be pretty melodramatic when it comes to the fashion thing, but this time I am as serious as the perfect black pump—this is some life-changing leather. From the drapey front to the high-cut back, Prps cape jacket is simply phenomenal. I would die to pair it with a loose white tee and a haute pink mini for a good girl gone rocker bad look. And it is totally NYC-cool with jeans and a killer shoe. The price tag is steep, but just insert crazy fashion math to justify it—“If I wear it everyday and most night, that comes out to like 45 cents/wear…” Right?
Mini-Prowl Though I consider leopard print the new neutral, I know not everyone thinks like Mimi. (What is wrong with you people? Lol) For those style scaredy-cats, try a leopard print scarf for just a touch of the trend. And though it may seem crazy, you can pair this piece with nearly anything—All black? I’m all in! Jewel tones? Jump in! Subtle prints? What a mixer! The scarf shown is by Tolani and will run you about a Benjamin. My style secret is street vendors. I picked up my kitty kat for $4 during a recent NYC trip. Ok, chicster, start your (mini) prowl.
Cinnamon-Spice and Everything Nice I’m an olfactory kinda gal, so scent is everything to me! While I love spice all year long, there’s just something about the crisp cool of Fall that makes me long for it even more. Whether by drink, candle or perfume, I gots to have that little zing. Some of my faves: Starbucks’ insanely addictive Pumpkin Spice Latte (it’s like Santa in September); Jo Malone candle in Pomegranate Noir; Marc Jacobs’ Lola which is bursting with zests of vanilla and musk.
All right, tartelette’s! Viva La Fall!
~So after a week of being at work, the dust from the wedding & honeymoon is finally starting to settle. It’s a little tricky to catch up but so nice to have free time again! In any case, the wedding weekend and the following 2 weeks in Fiji were the best weeks of my entire life, hands down. I couldn’t have been happier with the way things went at the wedding—from the flowers to the music to the ceremony to the black & white photobooth (the biggest hit of the night) to the food (which I barely touched, but I heard about) everything was amazing. Actually the only snag was when my best friend and I got up to duet on a song and the backup CD started skipping—oops! I think we saved it by launching into an a cappella rendition, though. Fiji was incredible too—paradise on earth, with the warmest people and incredible food…plus, of course, the scenery! It’s tough to be back, but I’m happy to be with all my tartelettes and being Mrs. DiResta isn’t so shabby either. -alexis
~This weekend Maria & I FINALLY took the cooking class we’d been talking about forever! We went all the way up to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY for an all day “Baking at Home” class. It was so much fun and we made a ton of delicious delights like Buttermilk Biscuits, Lemon Bundt Cake, Cinnamon Raisin Bread, & an incredible Chocolate Devilsfood Cake! We were definitely the star students of the class and got a little competitive with the other students, I think next time we’ll move up to an advanced class to really challenge ourselves. -erica
~I think once my boyfriend moves to NYC (Dec/Jan—fingers crossed he finds a job), I’m going to look into teaching gymnastics again on the weekend. Right now, I’m always traveling and don’t have time. When I lived in Boston I taught girls ages 4-13 every Saturday. It was such a blast! I haven’t done it in the past 2 years and I really miss it! That said I’m going to have to get into flipping shape again….that might be a problem! -candace
~Every year I say I’m going to dress up for Halloween and then I never do, but this year I decided I would dress Puppy Kisses up instead. I found the perfect costume for her – a pig! It’s perfect since pigs are my favorite animal, although I don’t think PK is quite sold on the idea yet, lol. -maria
~I’m still enjoying celebrating Maria’s birthday. Besides the delicious cupcakes, we went to Houston’s last night for dinner to continue the celebration! As crazy as this sounds, Houston’s is my favorite restaurant in the city (based on food only). I could eat there every night! My friend and I are going tomorrow night so I can get the ribs that I absolutely love!!-heather
~I had such a great birthday yesterday – calls from all of my friends and family, and Rich sent me flowers and a teddy bear, but what really made my day were the amazing strawberry shortcake cupcakes that Erica made for me! As I’m sure I mentioned several times I love just about anything pink, and pigs are my favorite animal so these were the perfect dessert for me! And I swear, these were created and hand made by Erica herself – she’s such a talented little cupcake! -maria
~Happy belated Thanksgiving, everyone!! Mine was so great-it was so nice to be home & relaxing for a long weekend. I had such a great time with my family-my grandpa made this DVD (complete with soundtrack) of old pictures from the 40s-50s of him and my grandma and my dad, aunt & uncle when they were young-it was so great. A huge hit with everyone…a hit only slightly bigger than the one Phil & I made with our homemade stuffing (recipe courtesy of Lallie’s mom, tweaked slightly by us…thanks Mrs H!). It was our first real foray into holiday cooking so I’m glad we did a good job. I love Thanksgiving. Oh, and also, Happy birthday Maria!!!!-alexis
~My grandfather from Scotland arrived yesterday for a 2 week visit! So happy to see him, he’s really great! I love spending quality time with the family and am really looking forward to this weekend. I’m also looking forward to all the chocolate (especially Flakes) he brings over from the UK -it’s so good!-heather
~Just saw Walk the Line on Friday night and I think I already want to see it again. I have loved Reese Witherspoon since Man in the Moon in 1991 and this just totally cemented it. Not to sound like every annoying review, but she really is completely transformative, as is Joaquin Phoenix. Their singing is amazing too and I’m totally buying the soundtrack now. You must go!-alexis
~So many people have been talking about James Frey’s book, A Million Little Pieces and I even put my name on the list at the library for it. I saw a friend this weekend and she gave it to me so I don’t have to wait anymore…must get through current book quickly so I can start reading this one. Can’t wait!-lallie
~Tonight I’m going to a screening of The Squid and the Whale with Billy Baldwin. I’m so excited; I’ve heard such great things about the movie! Billy and I both went to Binghamton and he’s hosting the screening in TriBeCa, I can’t wait to meet him. I’ll let you know how the movie is!-nicole
~Went to a wedding at the NY Botanical Gardens on Saturday – it was absolutely beautiful there. Doesn’t get any better than good food, good friends and unlimited drinks. -heather
~So I know Halloween has come and gone, but I didn’t get a chance to show you all the cutest girl in the entire world – my niece, Katelyn. Now for those of you who don’t know, she OBSESSED with Dora the Explorer so for months (literally) all she would talk about is ‘Dora, this’ and ‘Dora, that’ and ‘I’m going to be Dora for Halloween!’ So here is her absolutely adorable Dora costume! -maria
~So while Phil & his bro were out at a beer tasting festival on Saturday afternoon, I decided it would be a good time to do a little shopping-it’s been so long since I’ve spent the whole afternoon doing that!! I’ve been on a quest for brown boots pretty much since August and I think I found the perfect pair (alas, I can’t find a pic online). They’re great though—really comfy, casual chocolate brown suede boots with buckles up the side and a 2” heel. The only downside? The soles need a good scuffing, as evidenced by the fact that I walked into my building yesterday and promptly wiped out on the newly waxed floors. Ow.-alexis
~Well, it’s been one heck of a year so far and over the weekend, a few friends and I decided we’re going to take a New Year’s trip to St. Thomas. A few of us were there over Labor Day and have decided it was so awesome and not that expensive so we’re going back–hopefully there won’t be too many newlyweds there!-lallie
~Tuesday afternoon Lallie and I went to the Buttercup Bakeshop to get the tarte girls an afternoon treat. We got coconut cake, red velvet cupcakes, vanilla cupcakes, vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, and chocolate peanut butter bars. Words can not describe how good it tasted. Everyone loved us! For you New York girls, and anyone who is visiting, Buttercup is a must!-nicole
~So, one more task down…we ordered bridesmaids dresses this weekend and I’m so excited!! Now I definitely can start planning the color scheme for the whole thing. The dresses are a really pretty smoky lilac color and I think they’ll look so nice with really autumnal bouquets. There are 5 different styles and I think everyone is going to look amazing in them. (As long as they don’t show me up, that’s ok with me…haha).-alexis
~This weekend wasn’t too eventful but last week I promised everyone I’d show pics from Halloween. Alas, here is this year’s cheerleading uniform…Not like it’s any different from other years!! HAHA!! -lallie
~I am so excited to have a weekend at home! After being in Binghamton two weekends ago, and then in Chicago last weekend, I can finally rest! On Friday night I’ll be going to the Park Avenue Café for dinner to celebrate my friend Cecilia’s birthday. On Saturday Larry and I will watch some football (aren’t I a great wife? hehe), and the rest of the weekend I plan to read, go to the gym, and cook. I can’t wait!-nicole
~Just got back from a long weekend in San Francisco and we had such a nice time!! I got to go to my friend’s beautiful wedding in Palo Alto, stay with my best friend from high school in her awesome apartment in the Noe Valley, and tour a few vineyards in Napa & Sonoma. Viansa, the first one we went to, had nice wines but even better food-Phil and I had so much fun just sampling all their sauces & condiments. So good. We decided we had to narrow it to 2, so we brought back the Cilantro Lime Aioli and Peach Chardonnay Vinegar. Looking forward to cooking this weekend!-alexis
~Well I hope everyone had a great Halloween and they didn’t get too sick from eating too much candy! Everyone in the office has an on-going obsession with my crazy cat Molly, so for fun this Halloween I painted a Mollylumpkin. It’s was a big hit in the neighborhood and I think Molly appreciated it too!-erica
~I did some major fall cleaning around the apartment this weekend – I was dreading it but I’m so glad I did it! It’s amazing how much clutter can accumulate without even realizing it. And now I can fit my new tv stand I’ve been wanting to put in – yeah!-heather
