Day 1 of The Next 365

Yesterday we celebrated the 40th anniversary of Earth Day! As we wrapped our day of fun volunteer work at the EDAY40 event in Times Square (check out some footage on tarte TV to the right of this page) we couldn’t help but pat ourselves on the back. Not only was this a job well done, but it marked another year that we were committed to making our planet a better place. When I came back to the office, I immediately began reading your blog comments on my EcoPure post. Kudos to all of you! Your efforts, both big and small, help make our planet greener.

So what’s next? Today marks the first day of the next 365 on our road to Earth Day 2011. Over the next year will you change your routine to make it a little more green?  After all, going eco has become quite easy. I’ve put together a simple list of easy changes anyone can make; I hope to push you over the eco-edge!

  • Say “NO” to plastic! Plastic bags are everywhere, especially our landfills. Opt for a reusable, natural bag choice when you’re shopping for anything. If you don’t have one handy, still say no. Every morning when I’m grabbing my coffee on the way into the office the cashier tries to put it in a bag, I always say “No thanks, I can carry it.” For the first step, this is pretty easy & it makes a difference (520 bags I didn’t contribute to landfills this year)!
  • Switch to CFL energy efficient light bulbs. If you can’t afford to replace them all right away, replace a few & as some burn out continue your change. When it comes to any household appliance replacement, it’s best to consider energy efficient models.
  • Go solar! All the various technology trinkets we’ve become so reliant on have compatible solar chargers: power-up with the sun.
  • Pick natural options. Your everyday routine most likely goes through a lot of products that are packed with  toxins like parabens. Opt for natural makeup like tarte, organic shampoos and conditioners & other paraben free skincare items.

For more tips and ideas please read all the great comments from our readers. Remember, be good to your Mother (Earth)!

This week marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and what better time than the present to tell you a little more about tarte’s eco-friendly initiatives. I’ve decided to kick off our green chatter with one of our best packaging accomplishments and an industry first: EcoPure®.

Eco-what?!  For starters, did you know that it can take up to 80 years for plastic containers to breakdown? At the rate we consume and trash items…well, that’s a lot of buildup & every reason why we all need to be more aware. That’s why we originally launched our customer recycling program, but we wanted to do more. And in August 2009 we did exactly that with the launch of lifted™ natural eye primer.

This natural eye primer boasts high-performance natural™ ingredients like Ginseng & Firmitol™ and is clinically tested to tighten eyelids and decrease fine lines and wrinkles by 51% ten minutes post-application . So, why else is it on this eco-pedestal? Hello, EcoPure®.  The lifted™ component is made from plastic that is infused with EcoPure®, a recyclable, non-toxic resin-additive that allows plastics to completely biodegrade in less than 5 years!! I’d say that is pretty incredible. Lifted™ has an indefinite shelf-life and will only begin breaking down once it is placed in a landfill environment (i.e. not your beauty drawer).

Although we wish everything was made with the EcoPure® additive, it can be tricky. We are making our best attempts to continue to incorporate this breakthrough packaging material into the tarte line, as well as continuously explore all green packaging options.  In celebration of Earth Day we will be giving away a lifted™ to five lucky winners! To register all you have to do is share some recycling facts and tips below on the comment board with us. We’d love to hear what you’re doing to make this planet a greener place! Remember: be green, be smart, be tarte!

Celebrate Earth Month!

At tarte we’re always trying to reduce our carbon footprint. In celebration of Earth Month, we wanted to tell you about some of our favorite brands that are also consciously helping to save our beautiful planet! Green, natural, sustainable & even vegan choices are easier and easier to come by these days & I’m not talking about itchy hemp & recycled plastic cola bottles (though some innovatively use that in their packaging). I chose glam gems, silk rompers and luxe beauty items that all have an environmental mission.  This April (and the other 11 months of the year) we encourage you to be eco-chic by making eco-conscious choices.

Go Gorgeously Green with Tina Turnbow
