There’s no doubt that fall marks the new year in the fashion calendar. That being said my absolute favorite fall investment is a killer piece of outerwear. And this season you don’t have to break the bank to make a statement.
With so many options to choose from—a classic camel coat, military-inspired pea, faux fur vest or metallic trench—who other to turn to than Chris Bailey of Burberry Prorsum for spot-on outerwear perfection. For fall Burberry featured the most incredible pieces (top three across) and what I think makes them so desirable is that they’re all “wear-anywhere-with-anything”! Whether you’re rocking your go-to skinnies, heading to a business meeting or off to a party in your black mini dress, you can wear the same piece of outerwear. The versatility of these pieces allow them to look polished or perhaps hipster, day or night, and the list goes on… But back to reality, all of our garb can’t be straight off the runway. So, I did a little digging and found great alternatives to those amazing statements at a fraction of the price.
Love the Burberry Prorsum navy, double-breasted, military coat with that fabulous fit and gold button detail? Try the Marc by Marc Jacobs Gemini Melton or Milly Bastille coat. If you prefer the more rugged look of Prorsum’s shearling aviator with an oversized funnel collar, then fake it with Aqua’s faux-shearling motorcycle or Plastic Island’s Stonehenge. And, as if you could resist the teddy-bear look and over-sized proportions of that final look on the far right. No worries, both Alex + Olivia’s metallic faux and Cynthia Steffe’s Eliza do the same trick. Of course, we’d all like to spend the big bucks; however, we need to decide which investments are worth it. Remember: Don’t empty your pockets on a piece you won’t wear a million times over
Despite earlier thunderstorms and humid weather Tuesday, a bunch of us decided to head on over to The Great Lawn and listen to the sounds of the New York Philharmonic and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Unbeknownst to us, last night was a historic event since it was the first time that the New York Philharmonic shared the stage with another orchestra for their annual free concert. Thankfully, one of my friends arrived at 5:30pm to save us an area in Central Park. Otherwise, I don’t think we would’ve been able to put down our blankets; it was really packed! Once finally settled in we displayed our spread of wine, cheese, crackers, chips & some homemade guacamole and salsa (YUM). Some people had catered spreads, while others had their beach chairs—everyone was prepared for an evening picnic! At around 8pm the concert started and the crowd fell silent—it was such a cool experience and the music was just so beautiful.
Take a look at the program:
Polonaise from Eugene Onegin
Symphonic Dances from West Side Story
Overture to Tannhäuser
Largo al factotum della città from The Barber of Seville
“Je veux vivre” from Romeo and Juliet
“La ci darem la mano” from Don Giovanni
Ode to the Expo
Rhapsody in Blue
My goal this year is to experience more of these NYC moments! Would love to hear about your favorite NYC moment or experiences in your town!
On Tuesday night tarte had the honor of being a part of Fashion Delivers’ Pay It Fashion Forward event. If you haven’t heard of Fashion Delivers, it is a non-profit charitable foundation that was created to help Hurricane Katrina victims. Fashion Deliver’s mission is to mobilize the fashion community to reach out and affect the world through their donations. These donations provide relief and dignity to women, men, families and survivors of natural disasters. Since Katrina the organization has continued its admirable philanthropy and the fashion community has donated over $65 million dollars to natural disaster victims. Once a year Fashion Delivers host a Pay It Fashion Forward event to raise money for the freight costs for the delivery of goods.
This year Fashion Delivers concentrated its efforts on Haiti relief. Hosted by HBO stars Brian Greenberg and Emmanuelle Chriqui, Pay It Fashion Forward honored industry leaders who have had positive influences on their communities and environment at the Lucky Strike lanes in NYC. One of the event sponsors,
Forever21, was kind enough to bring tarte’s artistry team on board to create the beauty looks for the fashion show, which took place during the event. The tarte team had a blast and loved every second of being part of such a great cause. All of the event proceeds will subsidize the shipping costs of the $25 million dollars worth of product collected for Haiti!
We hope you enjoy our pictures & if you are in the NYC area next year you can purchase tickets for the event at Fashion Deliver’s website (http://www.fashiondelivers.org/). Please check out our video on tarte TV for clips from the fun-filled evening!

Early Sunday morning under the tents at Bryant Park, you could say the tarte team felt more in outer space than midtown Manhattan. OK maybe that’s a bit extreme, but Lela Rose was inspired by the textures and depths of the universe and her Fall 2010 collection speaks to that notion of nighttime skies and lunar moons. The tarte artistry team along with celebrity makeup artist lead, Tina Turnbow had the privilege to create the beauty look that complimented the ‘constellation like’ lineup. Tina created a muted, matte & cloudy complexion using tarte’s smooth operator tinted-moisturizer, provocateur pressed powder, blissful natural cheek stain & t-zone travel mattifying powder. But the focus was on the mysterious, moonlit eyes. Turnbow and team shaped depth with black, silver & graphite shadows using their eye-couture palettes; working from the outer corners in, they left no edges to the hazy look. A balmy but muted pout, textured updo by Ted Gibson & sparkling nails by Debra Lippman completed the ethereal feel. After two hours of backstage chaos & anticipation (might I add much-enjoyed chaos) the leggy beauties strutted the runway & “across the universe”.
This weekend tarte had the pleasure of kicking off Fashion Week at the Bryant Park Hotel with eco-chic designer Susan Woo! Despite all the chaos backstage, I was able to interview Susan (we’ll be posting the video on YouTube this week) and hear about her Medieval armor inspiration for the Fall 2010 collection. The one thing she consistently mentioned was that this modern-day woman is an effortless beauty. Collaborating with the tarte team, natural makeup artist Tina Turnbow complimented the wearable organic wools & cottons with a natural look for the presentation. The makeup was all about dewy, luminous skin with slightly flushed cheeks and berry stain on the lips. With glowing skin and tousled tresses by Bumble & Bumble, it’s definitely a look that’s easy to recreate and great to rock both day & night. Oh, also spotted looking flawless at the presentation was The Hills’ Olivia Palermo. Love her.
I love NYC Restaurant Week—it’s the perfect time to try out new and different restaurants without spending big bucks. I had been reading a lot about healthy hotspot Rouge Tomate; so my husband and our friends decided to check it out last Friday night. And we couldn’t have been more pleased! What’s great about this Michelin-Star restaurant is that they have a culinary nutritionist on staff to ensure that the dishes have perfect rations of meats to vegetables and fruits to nuts. Their philosophy is SPE™—they use 3 guidelines to “harmoniously blend extraordinary cuisine with authentic nutrition.” It’s all about sourcing seasonal and local foods, while also preparing and enhancing the meals in a sustainable manner. I love their motto, but enjoyed the food even more!! We all selected plates from the Restaurant Week menu along with the wine tasting (highly recommend). I had:
- Appetizer: Tombo Tuna Poke (Asian Pear, Watermelon Radish, Oyster Mushroom, Sesame)
- Main Course: Cauliflower Risotto (Heirloom Cauliflower, Parmesan, Garlic, Lemon Confit)
- Dessert: Golden Pineapple (Passion Fruit Curd, Mango, Kiwi, Coconut Tapioca)
