the breakdown on SPF
Summer is at our heels, tartelettes — for you west coast girls it is already here (lucky)! But with rising temps come harmful rays, and by now you should know that sun protection is key to maintaining a youthful complexion. And today, I’m going to tell you why.
SPF
A sunscreen’s SPF, or sun protection factor, measures how much the product shields the sun’s shorter-wave ultraviolet B rays, known as UVB radiation, which can cause sunburn — this leads to wrinkles and skin damage, not to mention skin cancer. You should be wearing a daily protection level of anywhere between SPF 15 to SPF 30. Always apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure, and when spending time in direct sunlight, you should reapply your every two hours. Many people — like me before I wrote this blog — are not sure how much sunscreen they need to apply in order to achieve full protection; one ounce or a shot glass size full of sunscreen should cover your entire body.
When shopping around for sun block, you want to choose one that guards against both UVA and UVB rays, this will help maintain and protect the health of your skin and prevents signs of aging from sun damage. I’ve broken down a list of products that will keep you covered when frolicking around outside this summer, wherever in the world you may be.
1. For full face coverage try MyChelle Replenishing Solar Defense SPF 30
2. For all over protection try Suntegrity all natural moisturizing body protection, broad spectrum SPF 30

“My UV Check”
With summer just around the corner there’s one thing on my mind: SUNSHINE! While I’m ashamed to admit it, I had a history of spending the day at the beach and not wearing enough sunscreen. In fact, there have been days I even woke up the next day looking like a lobster. This year I plan on enjoying the sunshine while still properly protecting my skin. Luckily, I recently came across a new iPhone application, “My UV Check” which is part of the Save our Skin campaign. My UV Check is the first application on the market that measures both the UVA and UVB index, provides individualized sun risk diagnosis and demonstrates how to check your own skin for suspicious lesions/moles. It also allows you to explore the La Roche – Posay Anthelios range for individualized product recommendations and to find the closest store near you. This app is the perfect way to help people like me practice save sunning!

College = change: no parents/curfews, new living conditions, different friends and the list goes on.One not so exciting change I experienced was how my skin reacted to it all. I managed to obtain all of the dreaded symptoms: occasional dryness and oily, habitual breakouts–ugh. And I know a lot of my college friends can relate. Let’s face it bad skin is triggered by diet, lack of sleep, and increased stress (thank you, college). I decided to do some research in the hopes of finding something that would help assuage the effects of my new lifestyle.
My first go-to: my all-knowing Mother. She suggested I read The Beauty Bible, by Paula Begoun. Three rules I’ve learned from Paula: 1) Be gentle!! Irritated skin means blemishes.2) Exfoliate 3) Use products with antioxidants—they fight free radicals (i.e. pollution and oxygen that cause our skin to prematurely age-Ahh!) So, I picked out some new products and ditched the harsh astringents that were drying out my face. I opted for Cetaphil, a gentle cleanser that won’t strip my skin of the natural, healthy oil needed to moisturize it (added bonus: it’s cheap). Then I picked out a 2% beta hydroxyl acid gel, which is used to exfoliate the skin and prevent blackhead build up. It gets rid of dead and damaged skin and literally leaves my face glowing after I use it. Lastly, I bought a bottle of milk of magnesia (yes, I know it’s more commonly used as a laxative). It’s a mineral that gently dries up pimples; it’s actually kind of awesome, not gross!
After I switched up my skincare routine, I was left with softer and almost breakout-free skin. SO EXCITING! ! What’s even more exciting is that I landed an internship with tarte and learned (and still learning) all about their skinvigorating™ ingredients. I realized all of tarte’s products are all full of antioxidants, the magical ingredients that The Beauty Bible says will fight aging and promote healthy skin! Now, my skincare and makeup régime is complete! Not only that but all of tarte’s products are gentle to the touch; I mean they literally feel GOOD when I apply them to my face. My favorite is smooth operator oil-free tinted moisturizer with SPF 15.
Well, that’s the extent of my skin care knowledge–let me know what you think?! I’d love to hear about your routines!
