wine week: light, yet bold, fashion

tarte’s wine week continues with today’s feature: whites! Can you think of anything more refreshing on a hot summer afternoon than a glass of chilled white wine? We sip this pale-hued vino in the colder months, too – especially when we’re munching on veggie dishes, pastas, or fish.  Of course, if you’re prone to spillage (as we are), you know that white is the choice when light-colored clothing or drink-in-hand dancing might be involved.

Not all whites are created equal, however – they can range from clear, crisp, and grassy to golden, sweet, and rich. Below, a primer on a few of our favorite shades of white… and outfits to go with them all.

Super Saturday 13!

During the summer the Hamptons are filled with high-profile bashes, but nothing beats a mid-afternoon shopping soirée with ALL proceeds going to charity. This past weekend marked the annual Super Saturday 13 event at Nova’s Ark Project in Water Mill, N.Y. (South Hampton). This giant, outdoor sample sale has rows of incredible designers & generous sponsors all supporting an amazing foundation: The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. tarte was honored to be back for our 7th year; but don’t let us fool you it’s not ALL work and no play. At some points throughout the day Maureen, Candace, Leigh & I enjoyed shopping along with the massive crowds! Although, I picked-up some great buys from kooba, J Brand, DVF & others I fully enjoyed celeb spotting some fab fashionistas like Kelly Ripa, Ashley Greene, Rachel Zoe & the Kardashian sisters! Despite 90-degree temperatures, they all looked fabulous.

In addition to the designer booths, brands and celebrities also have the opportunity to sell their products live on QVC. As the Broadcast Sponsor, The Q was able to promote Super Saturday 13 nationwide. So even if you couldn’t attend the event, you could still help support the cause! Both the sales of the live broadcast and qvc.com (during that time slot) benefit OCRF. In just 3 minutes tarte’s CEO/Founder Maureen Kelly  sold over 2,500 be good to your mother (Earth) natural cotton totes and 24.7 lip sheer sets! And that’s just a snapshot of the amazing charitable contributions we made that day!

After everyone hit the cashier stands and collected all of their fabulous buys, the OCRF is proudly reported that Super Saturday 13 raised a total of $3.4 million dollars for the foundation in just 1 day! I’d have to say it’s the best shopping trip I’ve experienced; every penny is well spent and I have zero buyer’s remorse! Good news: Super Saturday isn’t just for socialites and celebs. Anyone can go—so next year be sure to visit OCRF’s website and buy a ticket. We hope to see you there! ;)

Weekend Trip in Boston!

My internship at tarte has allowed me to explore NYC, but the city I know best is Boston. For the past two years, I’ve been attending Boston College (living just outside the city) and I always look forward to the frequent weekend trips with my girlfriends. I’m no Daily Candy weekend guide, but I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite things to do!

On a pleasant summer day, I highly recommend a trip to Boston Common—the oldest park in the country! It’s the starting point to the Freedom Trail and many prominent people have spoken in the park (Martin Luther King Jr., Pope John Paul II, and Gloria Steinem). With more than 40 acres of green grass, you can relax, play Frisbee or even picnic (but don’t forget your SPF)! During the summer several concerts occur—so, if you’re in the area, it’s a must! Nearby the Commons is the infamous Newbury Street—a true fashionista’s playground. The street is lined with great stores and boutiques, both upscale and affordable, for a fun day of shopping. There’s truly something for everyone, even vintage! Some of my favorites: Calypso, DVF, Second Time Around….and the list goes on).

While there are plenty of great restaurants on Newbury Street (my fave: Stephanie’s on Newbury), I always head to the North End for some Italian. Mangia, mania! The North End is a “Little Italy” filled with gelato shops, pizzerias, and Old-School Italian restaurants. My pick: Dolce Vita—it has great food and live music. Actually, one night a man playing the accordion sang “That’s Amore”!

If you’re looking for some culture, I’d suggest stopping by one of Boston’s museums. If you’re a history buff, then I recommend the JFK Presidential Library and Museum, Old South meeting House or Paul Revere’s House. For the artists, check out the Museum of Fine Arts. And one of my favorites—visit the Museum of Science for one of its interesting exhibits. Recently, I went to the Harry Potter exhibit—it was so fun!

Finally, you can’t leave Boston without making an appearance at some sort of sports game.  In the summer check out a Red Sox game, the fans never disappoint. A team that not many people know about, and probably my favorite Boston team, is the Boston Blazers; Boston’s very own lacrosse team. If you’re around during their season, which is January to April, the tickets are cheap; the game is fast pace; and the fans are a rowdy bunch (especially, if you’re sitting next to a group of 26 yr old dudes clad in blazers)!

So there you have it, my ideal weekend in Boston. Let me know if you think I missed anything!

Kate

Table Toppers

I love to collect coffee table books that I can flip through time and time again & experience total sensory overload. With anything from fashion to photography these books are perfect room accents. Like all collectables, it’s always fun to gift others with one of your favorites. For your bestie’s next birthday, house warming party or even a thoughtful token of appreciation–choose a creative hardcover. These are some of my favorites along with newcomers that I can’t wait to get my claws on. I hope you find the perfect one for you!

For the Collector:
Andy Warhol Prints: A Catalogue Raisonne 1963-1987—with 384 pages and 1,700 reproductions from the man who IS pop art, this is the perfect colorful addition to any bookshelf.

Louis Vuitton: Art, Fashion and Architecture—a lavish montage of Vuitton’s collaborations with world renowned artists (trunks and bags aside).

For the Fashion Maven:
Who What Wear: Celebrity and Runway Style for Real Life—we were already addicted to the site, so the book is a given for any seasoned stylista.
The Teen Vogue Handbook—the go-to reference for all that is fashion, even beyond your teen years.

For the Visionary:
Hue by Kelly Wearstler—with projects arranged by color, Wearstler’s design inspiration proves much deeper than the walls she decorates.
Marchesa Casati: Portraits of a muse—the complete portrait of an everlasting style icon, including insightful contributions from the likes of DVF and Karl Lagerfeld.

Kristin

~I admit it, I’ve been very bad. I just got the best cream puffs. Soooo bad for my diet but you must try them! They’re called
Papa Beard’s and they are the creamiest, most amazing sweet things I’ve ever had!!-telly

4/28/05

~Greetings from Hong Kong! My days are filled with meetings and trips to China everyday, but I am completely enjoying it because I get to spend time with my family. I am being totally spoiled by my mom and dad because I don’t have to lift a finger at home ….I sure will miss it next week when I’m back in New York.-leonie

~Tonight I’m having dinner with two of my closest friends, Meredith and Dayna. Unfortunately, being that it’s Passover, no delicious pizza or pasta for us! I can’t wait for this holiday to end because I am CRAVING pizza like you wouldn’t believe! I am seriously going through withdrawal. I guess I’ll have to deal with a steak (poor me-hehe).-nicole

4/26/05

~My entire weekend consisted of party after party after party. Friday night was my friend’s surprise birthday party, Saturday was my other friend’s luau themed birthday party and Sunday we barbecued for my niece’s 5th birthday. I never though I would say this, but I think I am all partied out for a while! Best part of the weekend: the teriyaki chicken skewers at the luau. I seriously must have eaten 8 pieces!-maria

~I honestly couldn’t be more excited about tonight! It’s the Jammy Awards, sort of like the Grammy’s for jam bands and so much more fun. I bought my tickets like two months ago and it seemed so far away. Now it’s here!-lallie

4/25/05

~The last thing I watched before I fell asleep last night was an Emeril show on the Food Network. I think it was “Emeril’s Pastry Pointers”. I don’t even like cream puffs or eclairs, particularly, but the show made me kinda wish I was a housewife and I could just sit at home today, whipping up treats with my Kitchenaid mixer. I’m so 1950s at heart.-alexis

4/22/05

~I am so happy it’s Friday. I don’t even care that the weather’s supposed to suck tomorrow. I just want to relax at home, have some eggs & read the paper. The only thing that could perfect my morning is if the New York Times had the Split Decisions puzzle tomorrow. It’s like a modified crossword that they only do about five times a year. Yes, I’m a total nerd. And proud of it.-alexis
~Ok people. It’s official. I think I’m going to get a dog. I’ve been looking at
Shibu Inu’s (they look like little foxes!) but I’m still not sure. Love, love Border Collies but I can’t exactly have a sheep herding dog in my apartment! So excited!!-lallie

4/21/05

~Tonight is my first dress fitting!! I’m really nervous, so of course I’m eating a chocolate crossiant for breakfast. Let’s just blame that on nerves. I got my shoes this weekend-
Stuart Weitzman. Surprisingly, they’re comfortable. I can’t believe the wedding is in less than three months. I’m freaking out. There’s too much to do!!!!!!!!!-nicole

4/20/05

~Four birthday cakes and a wedding… that’s a total of five cakes! Rounding out a week of celebrating my 22nd Birthday. It was all topped off Sunday (my actual birthday) by a party and the coolest cake ever, in tarte colors of course!-erica

4/19/05

~This weekend was so perfect! The weather was finally cooperative, so I spent Saturday shopping at Woodbury Commons and Sunday barbequing with friends at my house. I finally feel like its spring, but now I want it to be summer!-maria

~So I went to my first Yankee game of the season last night! Perfect weather too! There’s nothing like watching a ballgame (and having them win), having a beer in one hand and a hotdog in the other…Can’t wait for the next one!-heather

4/18/05

~Tonight is my tap class! This is the class where I find out if I advance to the “advanced beginners” class. I have faith. I have been doing pretty well and my teacher seems to like me. Wish me luck! PS-This is a great workout!-lallie

~My best friend said she wants board games for her birthday, so I decided to go to Ebay to see if I could find some old school gems (Girl Talk Date Line, the Sweet Valley High board game which I had etc). I found instead
Mall Madness And now I am coveting it so bad! Remember those fake credit cards? And the little “cha-ching” sound it would make when you swiped it? So good.-alexis

4/15/05

~So last night we went bowling for Erica’s birthday. It was SO much fun, even though at one point I actually threw the ball backwards (not a lie. I’ll blame the beer). What we learned is that Raquel & Maria are secret ringers. The fact that I am a total spaz cameas a shock to no one. Had the BEST time though! I think tarte should start a bowling league.-alexis

4/14/05

~I am happy to report that the wedding planning is coming along quite nicely. Larry and I started taking dance lessons. I think there’s hope for us! He says I always try to lead but I have to let him do it-he’s such a guy. We still don’thave our song yet. Any suggestions out there? If so, please post it on the forum!-nicole

4/13/05

~Oh yeah! Tomorrow we’re going bowling for Erica’s birthday! Woohoo! I am THE champion bowler (or maybe I just think I am). Either way, it’s going to be some great exercise and fun time with the tartelettes!-heather

~I know its only Wednesday, but I’m already looking forward to this weekend. My boyfriend and I are going to clean up my patio, set up the grill (and bar) and have a huge BBQ! Now if we could just have one weekend without rain, everything would be perfect!-maria

4/11/05

~I must take a moment to praise outlet shopping. My boyfriend and I went up to Woodbury Commons yesterday (www.chelseapremiumoutlets.com) and the deals are just ridiculous. There were all these “spring madness” sales too, so everything was discounted upon discounted. I made out with cute DVF & YSL tops and a Pucci dress, and my boyfriend got a Burberry shirt. And if I told you what we paid, you would die of shock. Run, don’t walk.-alexis

4/8/05

~So I am officially an aunt (well, almost) for the first time ever!! My boyfriend’s sister had her baby girl on Wednesday night. Her name is Mya Nicole (we have the same middle name!) and she weighs 7lbs 3 oz, and she was just the cutest little bundle when we saw her yesterday! I haven’t been to the hospital to see a newborn since my cousins were born in 1986, so it’s been a while. I was a little teary-eyed- I can only imagine what I’ll be like when it’s my OWN kid. Anyway, congratulations Pam & Anthony!!-alexis

~Though I’m glad that the weather has changed for the better, I have to say… it’s totally ruining my bank account! It was beautiful out yesterday so I decided to go shopping during lunch. My best friend and I went on a shopping extravaganza yesterday on our lunch hour: white linen skirt (oh so tropical chic!), a metallic mesh belt that matches my bronze wedge sandals PERFECTLY (still looking for a bag), and a bunch of basics. Can’t wait for it to be warm enough for me to wear it all!-telly

4/7/05

~This wonderful spring day! I am so happy and now more motivated to finish planning my wedding, which is only two and half months away!! Just made the final decisions on my bridesmaid dresses-cherry red! Now if only I could go to Central Park for a walk to think about what else I have to do…-nicole

~I am so excited that I am going on a business trip to
Hong Kong next week! This means I get to go home and see my family! I must admit that this is one my favorite things about my job. I haven’t seen my family, my puppy and my friends for ages so this is perfect! I went shopping gifts for them over the weekend and just couldn’t buy enough! They love American things so I am going again this weekend. I hope the weather’s nice!-leonie

4/5/05

~To make my mom happy, my boyfriend and I drove down to Atlantic City on Saturday to spend the weekend there. Not really the ideal place for 20-somethings to hang out, but we made the best of it and we dragged my boyfriend’s brother and friend along for the ride! Plus, we got back just in time to watch the
Yankees beat the Red Sox. A good beginning to a promising season!-maria

~So I just got back from the wedding in
New Orleans…so wonderful but too short!! My boyfriend won $1000 in the casino on Saturday night!! That money better go towards my ring fund!(hehe) Just kidding!! At least the weather in NY is nice today. Makes it so much easier to work.-heather

4/4/05

~OK, so remember that awards show I mentioned on Friday?? We actually WON!!! (Well, we tied with Burts Bees, but still). Our little slide tin lip balm went up against Revlon, L’Oreal & mark and actually beat them! I’m still reeling from the shock. Anyway, thank you all for being so supportive-we couldn’t have done it without you! We’d also like to thank the Academy…heh heh heh.-alexis

4/1/05

~Well, the pseudo rockstar has done it again…I went to Fergie’s (from the Black Eyed Peas) birthday party at Marquee last night and I am literally dragging in my shoes today. When will I stop thinking I am a) rich and b) able to stay out all night!?? TGIF is all I have to say!-lallie

Very exciting news–we’re off to the CEW Beauty Awards today (sort of the Oscars of the beauty industry) to root for our slide tin lipbalm. We’re nominated in the “lip product under $12.50″ category with some HUGE competition–imagine: little tarte like the independent film that gets nominated against the blockbuster! So in this case it really IS an honor just to be nominated–but winning would be even better. Fingers crossed!-alexis
