My internship at tarte has allowed me to explore NYC, but the city I know best is Boston. For the past two years, I’ve been attending Boston College (living just outside the city) and I always look forward to the frequent weekend trips with my girlfriends. I’m no Daily Candy weekend guide, but I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite things to do!
On a pleasant summer day, I highly recommend a trip to Boston Common—the oldest park in the country! It’s the starting point to the Freedom Trail and many prominent people have spoken in the park (Martin Luther King Jr., Pope John Paul II, and Gloria Steinem). With more than 40 acres of green grass, you can relax, play Frisbee or even picnic (but don’t forget your SPF)! During the summer several concerts occur—so, if you’re in the area, it’s a must! Nearby the Commons is the infamous Newbury Street—a true fashionista’s playground. The street is lined with great stores and boutiques, both upscale and affordable, for a fun day of shopping. There’s truly something for everyone, even vintage! Some of my favorites: Calypso, DVF, Second Time Around….and the list goes on).
While there are plenty of great restaurants on Newbury Street (my fave: Stephanie’s on Newbury), I always head to the North End for some Italian. Mangia, mania! The North End is a “Little Italy” filled with gelato shops, pizzerias, and Old-School Italian restaurants. My pick: Dolce Vita—it has great food and live music. Actually, one night a man playing the accordion sang “That’s Amore”!
If you’re looking for some culture, I’d suggest stopping by one of Boston’s museums. If you’re a history buff, then I recommend the JFK Presidential Library and Museum, Old South meeting House or Paul Revere’s House. For the artists, check out the Museum of Fine Arts. And one of my favorites—visit the Museum of Science for one of its interesting exhibits. Recently, I went to the Harry Potter exhibit—it was so fun!
Finally, you can’t leave Boston without making an appearance at some sort of sports game. In the summer check out a Red Sox game, the fans never disappoint. A team that not many people know about, and probably my favorite Boston team, is the Boston Blazers; Boston’s very own lacrosse team. If you’re around during their season, which is January to April, the tickets are cheap; the game is fast pace; and the fans are a rowdy bunch (especially, if you’re sitting next to a group of 26 yr old dudes clad in blazers)!
So there you have it, my ideal weekend in Boston. Let me know if you think I missed anything!
I think the only thing that’s going to get me through the winter is my January vacation. Anyone who knows me well knows I am just not a cold weather person, so all I can think about when I’m bundled in layers of clothes, jackets and scarves is the beaches of the Dominican Republic! It’s about 40 days away – hopefully I don’t totally freeze by then! -Maria
I just got back from Mexico for my brother-in-law’s wedding (congrats Vin & Jess!), which was SO much fun, even though it kinda threw me out of the holiday season. (On the way home, I had to listen to Christmas songs on my iPod to get myself back in the mood and prepare for the impending cold.) But what is it about taking one vacation that makes you immediately need to plan another? While we were drinking mojitos poolside, we got in a huge conversation about going to Italy in February…now I’m ready to book it today. And I might actually do it. -Alexis
I just confirmed my holiday trip this year and am so excited I can not sit still! My boyfriend and I are traveling to New Zealand and Australia for an amazing tour of the best beaches and surf spots. I learned to surf this summer from my uncle and my cousins on the Oregon coast and now want to take on bigger and better waves. I asked Santa for a custom longboard this year, so we’ll see if he thinks I’ve been naughty or nice! -Heather R
~All this gross rain is giving me a sinus headache and makes me want to hide under the covers all day. On the other hand, it’s also getting me that much more excited for my upcoming vacation to Mexico!! Words cannot express how much I’m looking forward to six days of doing absolutely nothing. I am also a big fan of the “eat whatever you want” vacation method, especially when it means mounds of quesadillas and salty margaritas. Which is why I look forward to having Levi kick my butt for the next 3 weeks…so I can prematurely undo the damage! -alexis
~As a continuation of my last blog, I have been looking into tennis lessons and actually bought a new racket over the weekend. I played at the outdoor courts near my house and have a very sore right arm, and slight tan, to show for it. My next task is to set up my first lesson so that I’m not hitting the ball like I would a baseball. I’m really not as uncoordinated as I looked! -heather r
~I am so excited because me and 12 of my sorority sisters from college are going to Atlantic City for the weekend! As I’m sure you know coordinating dinner for 4 friends can sometimes be impossible so the fact that 13 of us are going is practically a miracle. Nothing’s better then a weekend of going out, gambling and Gamma Girls…now let’s just hope some of us win! -maria
