They say that spring is wedding season, but most of the brides we know have been getting hitched in the fall! Boston-based makeup artist Lissa Bloom from 2kissandmakeup.com shares her tips & tricks on how to get that “bridal natural glow” this season…
Many brides tell me that they want a glowing complexion with minimal makeup. Unfortunately ladies, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but flawless skin doesn’t just happen. I’m not sure who started this urban makeup legend, but I’m destined to stop it. I’m constantly telling my brides that when you think someone isn’t wearing makeup (i.e. those gorgeous celebrities), I can assure you that they most def are wearing it (and most likely a lot of it)!
The first product I use (after applying moisturizer) is tarte’s clean slate primer. This product is essential in helping makeup stay put, even in the worst of conditions (stress, heat, humidity, stress, and dare I say: rain). It also prevents makeup from building up in any fine lines or wrinkles that you may have (and not want to admit to). Can I get an AMEN?!
My next product fave is tarte’s ReCreate Anti-Aging Foundation with Wrinkle Rewind™. Not only is this foundation clinically proven to reduce the signs of aging, it also gives skin a pick-me-up, balances uneven skin tones, and helps to cover those lil’ imperfections (darn pimples) that we all have.
And let’s face it: everyone wants to have tanned, glowing skin but sans the sun. tarte’s , Park Avenue Princess, is a mineral-based bronzer that gives skin a beautiful glow, without having too much shimmer and shine. Although shimmer may look good on some body parts, it can also magnify large pores and any skin imperfections. We can’t have any of that in your priceless pictures!
To finish off a bride’s complexion, I use tarte’s natural cheek stain. These are FANTASTIC! This creamy formula makes it super easy to blend into skin, making it virtually goof proof. The shade range is also beautiful—guaranteed to have the perfect color for every bride.
As a self-proclaimed mascara snob, there is only one mascara that I allow on my bride’s big day: tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes! This mascara not only enhances lash length, but it also volumizes, curls, and conditions. This quadruple-threat mascara could cause the demise of fake lashes everywhere (gasp).
Remember….just because a bride has to wear something old and borrowed, it doesn’t have to be her makeup.

Early Sunday morning under the tents at Bryant Park, you could say the tarte team felt more in outer space than midtown Manhattan. OK maybe that’s a bit extreme, but Lela Rose was inspired by the textures and depths of the universe and her Fall 2010 collection speaks to that notion of nighttime skies and lunar moons. The tarte artistry team along with celebrity makeup artist lead, Tina Turnbow had the privilege to create the beauty look that complimented the ‘constellation like’ lineup. Tina created a muted, matte & cloudy complexion using tarte’s smooth operator tinted-moisturizer, provocateur pressed powder, blissful natural cheek stain & t-zone travel mattifying powder. But the focus was on the mysterious, moonlit eyes. Turnbow and team shaped depth with black, silver & graphite shadows using their eye-couture palettes; working from the outer corners in, they left no edges to the hazy look. A balmy but muted pout, textured updo by Ted Gibson & sparkling nails by Debra Lippman completed the ethereal feel. After two hours of backstage chaos & anticipation (might I add much-enjoyed chaos) the leggy beauties strutted the runway & “across the universe”.
We haven’t even made it to Ground Hog Day, but I certainly see spring on the horizon. Trends are emerging and some key themes are giving me a heavy dose of optimism! Although I was all for heavy studs last fall; this spring I’ll channel my inner flower child in a whole new way. I do love the laid back boho look, but lately I’m more intrigued by ultra-girly flowers in an array of different looks! Bursts, liberty prints, artsy watercolors—you name it and I’ll try it. Above are totally different designs that are blooming for spring & each is just as feminine as the next (from left-to-right: tarte collaborated with Celebrity Makeup Artist Tina Turnbow for our newest natural cheek stain—flower child, Rebecca Taylor skirt, Nanette Lepore honeysuckle dress & Lauren Moffat top and shorts). As you can imagine, we tarte girls love anything nature inspired, but what we really adore about this look is that there’s really something for everyone!
And what is this organic wonder product? Why, Desert Essence’s tea tree oil products! I discovered this 30-year-old brand while shopping (food-sample stealing) at Whole Foods, and on a whim bought the Facial Cleansing Pads. Though I had heard the joys of tea tree oil countless times before, it took these little rounds to make me a true believer. Soaked, but not saturated in the oil, these pads are a great post-cleanser companion that will have your face glowing with tea tree goodness. Be careful on your first use. Tea tree oil packs a powerful punch that may have your eyes watering—but in a “Ooo, these puppies are really working” way.
I loved my blemish-free lifestyle courtesy of the pads so much, that I ventured to Desert Essence’s Thoroughly Clean Face Wash. From first splash, this cleanser left my face feeling like silk. Maybe that’s because of all the wonderful organic essential oils like extracts of Goldenseal, Hawaiian White Ginger (Awapuhi), and essential oil of Chamomile. Talk about a skin cocktail!
And I can’t wait to complete the natural skincare trifecta with the Tea Tree Oil Skin Ointment, a renaissance cream that does everything from relieve razor burn to moisturize damaged cuticles.
But don’t just take my word about the skin-soothing savvy of Desert Essence. Here’s a testimony from a very content consumer.
“Your Tea Tree Oil has done on my face what 4 dermatologists and hundreds of dollars in treatments could not. Very grateful devotee of your product.” – Irene
So, tartelettes, go on and do that organic shuffle that you know so well. Your skin will be so thankful!
