Creme Scene

These past two weeks have been CRAZZZY for anyone wrapped up in this glamorous world we call the fashion/beauty industry. It started with  Vogue’s retail extravaganza and Fashion’s Night Out! And Mercedes Benz New York Fashion week is coming to an end. The culmination of a season’s planning has finally come to fruition. I’m happy to report that I’m tossed in the mix of this wildness & I love it! (Check back later this week for a recap of Odd Molly’s spring collection where tarte is creating the look this evening)!

Amongst everything, I love to go back and look through all of the images of the shows and spot emerging trends. Surprisingly, thus far, I’ve seen a lot of neutrals and minimalism for the spring 2011 season (unlike punchy colors of the past). The color crème/ivory has been pretty prominent on the runway. I love the crisp elegance of the looks above (l-to-r: Dennis Basso, Ports 1961, and Reem Acra). What do you think? What would you love to see for spring 2011 and most importantly what trend would you love to never see again?!

Favorite Back to School Looks

As summer comes to an end, it’s time for me to start thinking about the coming school year. This includes getting together all of my favorite fall fashion picks. After browsing through recent magazines, I’m excited to say that I can still use some of my go-to trends from previous years like the classic blazer.  I bought mine two years ago to complete my preppy college girl look, and I know I will continue to wear it for the rest of my life! Both my Mother AND Grandmother own one. It’s a great investment!  To make my “blazer adorned” outfit age-appropriate, I pair it with skinny jeans, statement heels, and tons of jewelry—chunky bracelets, long necklaces, and big pearl earrings. I think these feminine touches balance out the masculine feel. I love my blazer because not only does it prove to stand the test of time, but it can also be worn in ANY situation like casual shopping, business meetings, and a night out on the town, etc. It’s basically the best piece in my closet!

As for my beauty picks this fall, I love soft, natural eyes with a statement lip. It’s amazing how defined lips can pull your whole look together. tarte has some great lip selections for the autumn. The new LipSurgence™ matte lip stains come in fashionably-chic colors.  As I tend to be a pink-loving girl, I would choose tarte’s LipSurgence™ natural matte lip stain in lively, which is a vivid pink. Some other great choices are fiery (red) and envy (a deep berry color).  To accompany my bold lip, I’d create a natural eye with tarte’s 12-hour lock and roll eye shadow in either sandstone or rose gold. Then I’d layer on lots of lights, camera, lashes! 4-in-1 natural mascara! To complete my look I would add a subtle touch of color with tarte’s natural cheek stain in tipsy. And voila!  A natural and stylish look for fall.

Hope you agree. Have a great fall!

Shady Lady

With the sun blazing from LA to NY, this girl needs some runway inspiration before I melt away in my boring white tank. Season after season Giambattista Valli never ceases to amaze me. I couldn’t help but ogle over his 2010 collection and share with you two “shady lady” images that scream glamorous summer!  Whether it’s a day-time mini, chic-evening frock, a look inspired by the Roaring Twenties or a throwback to the ‘50s, I want every piece in my wardrobe now (hey, this fashion, savvy-twenty something can dream, right?)

Black and green being two of my favorite colors mixed with fringed mini skirts… forget it, I’ve died and gone to fashion heaven! Unfortunately, these goodies will not be hanging in my closest anytime soon. However, I can replicate some of these leggy catwalkers’ style .

For starters, these jumbo mirrored lenses instantly remind me of Johnny Depp in Willy Wonka & I love it! They are timeless (I swear my Grandma once wore these), chic and unquestionably sexy . I found the perfect pair of Chloe Myrte’s to achieve all of the above.

Now, I wouldn’t be a tartelette if I didn’t notice that  stunning neon pout. The bold hue is both red and coral. I hit the beauty lottery by swiping on 1 base coat of LipSurgence™ lip stain  in joy (a perfect peach) and 1 top coat in lust (brilliant red)! I love both colors alone, but why not give it a twist by layering? It’s the perfect lip product for pop colors because they require no liner and are juicy, but not too glossy that the color might bleed. This creative boost of color completes the entire look. I hope this inspires you to step out of your style box and have fun with your fashion before the summer is over.

Tuccia Di Capri Sandals!

The NY temps are hitting 90 degrees today and if you remember 5th grade science NYC suffers from a little dilemma known as heat island effect. Unfortunately, our fabulous 13 mile stretch hardly resembles the summer island hot spots we day dream of. Thankfully, Henri Bendel has come to our rescue and these days the luxe isle of Capri is only a hop, skip and jump down 5th avenue!

Capri is synonymous with the Piazzetta, the Grotta Azzura (blue grotto) and traditional sandal making.  This summer you can be living ‘la dolce vita’ while lounging on a downtown rooftop with Tuccia Di Capri.  This custom sandal company was started by models-turned-entrepreneurs, Tove Nord and Terri Coleman. Made in traditional Capri fashion, they are now offering the work of their chic cobblers at a featured shop in  Henri Bendel! In just 1 hour you can choose the look (flat, medium wedge, high wedge), style (named after ultra-glam icons who often sported their own custom sandals around the island), and embellishments! The artisans then work their magic and just like that you have made-to-measure perfection.

I hope all of you NY fashionistas head out and embrace the Italian tradition; I know I will. I would love for you to share pics of  your pair with us!

DENIM 101

We are living in uncertain denim times, chicsters! Boutiques abound with no-name brands priced as high as old faves. “No I will not pay $289 for skinnies with sparkle by HauteHighDenimCoutureFAB!”

Well have no fear, my dears because Mimi is here— to give you the know-how to picking the chicest denim gear you’ll need from June on…

Before I purchased my denim shirt (Target little boys dept—$9.99!), I thought cutoff shorts were the holy grail of jeans. Boy, was I wrong! My denim button-up has made appearances at the year’s most major holidays—Thanksgiving, Christmas and Memorial Day— and waltzes into the workplace at least once a week. My key to keeping it fresh…well, beyond Frebreze? Rocking it dressy or casual with posh panache! One week it’s tucked into khaki cropped trousers, and the next its doing the wild thing on top of a leopard mini. J.Crew has awesome styles, but if you wanna save a buck (or 80), hit up the little boys section.

If you’re a little hesitant to wear denim anywhere but on your derriere, no worries—there are plenty of accessories that pay wonderful homage to Levi’s love. I dare you to not die for the Tory Burch Delaney satchel. Nothing says Hot American Summer like dark denim and cherry red! And for the gal who’s rockerchic, I present you American Retro’s crazzzzycool denim studded wedge. Now that’s a mouthful of trends! For our femme fatale, Eugenia Kim’s denim rosette headband is the headgear to highlight summer waves.

I’m not much of a jeans person… “Post on denim?!?!?! Mimi, you’re confused, honey!” Allow me to explain— while I own gobs of jeans, they are never my go-to-gear. Friends and family literally gasp when I wear the stuff! But when it comes to cutoff jean shorts—wooooo weeee, I’m in love. I was wearin’ them indaclub loooong before Erin Wassson was rockin’ her pair after hours. And since that fateful Miami night, I’ve been doing my Daisy Duke dance non-stop. White tee? DUH! Blazer+pumps? Of course! Button-down and pumps? You better believe. For any skeptic thinking denim shorts reek of down on the farm, pair them with sleek accessories for a look that is totally urban chic!

I LOATHE denim skirts- let me repeat- LOATHE! My galpals have diagnosed it as an irrational dislike, but when I see those denim minis with bedazzled back pockets and strings hanging from the hem…I lose it, and with good reason! There is a much more stylish option for any dressy denim inquiries…and it’s all in the name! I am in love with the feminine pleats of this Arden B. version. Add a few of Mimi’s haute pink picks from last week’s post and you will be SummerStylin! And “if I were a rich girl…” I would snap up this Herve Leger sexy style in a second!

All right, tartelettes, dump the dull denim and shake it up with Mimi’s picks! It’s the best jean junk you’ll ever own swear!

Ooh La Lux…For Less!!

After a 3 year stint working for a jeweler, I’ve accumulated some decent knowledge when it comes to gems. Size, cut, color–I’ve got it down. Basket, channel, pavè…check.  I really appreciate the importance & sentiment behind fine jewelry, but I also know that mixing fine and costume is a must! Fabulous statement pieces can cost a pretty penny (and well worth the splurge on occasion) but a great rule of thumb is: if it’s a trend or only going to be worn a few times, then go for costume. Just yesterday while flipping through the pages of one of my favorite mags, People Style Watch, I was reminded of my rule. It’s a great lesson & I thought I’d should share my story…

Former jewelry publicist Carol Brodie knows her gems & used her passion to launch her own line Rarities on HSN. She has created some knockout pieces all of which I would LOVE to own. This beauty (who is also a tarte fan) often reminds me of a gal worthy of her own “Sex and The City” character.  I often ogle over her collection and I recently fell in love with this incredible pair of turquoise and diamond earrings– $849 or 4 easy payments of $212.47. I’ve been having this internal battle of whether or not I would splurge–they are unique, real & would be a nice, hard-earned present to myself. The question that put on the breaks…After spring/summer when would I really wear these? I closed my web browser and left the idea in the dust (slightly heartbroken).

This leads me back to last night when I was reading PSW. My Carol Brodie turq earrings dream came true—sort of. I’d like to think Michelle Trachtenberg and I have similar taste since we both have a love for turquoise! Her $60 Kendra Scott jewels are strikingly similar to the real deal & with an extra 25% off at Max & Chloe: CHA-CHING!

So my perfect COSTUME jewels are on their way. Since I won’t be wearing them year round (prob like 5 months), they are totally worth the price!

Hello, Sweetheart

As the stars walked the Red Carpet some looks were right on and others, well…. not so much.  Three of my favorite dresses were all different with one common thread: the ultra-feminine, sweetheart neckline.  This super-girly cut really shows off your collar bones & in my opinion, collar bones are sexy (notice there’s no need for necklaces with these gowns)!  Now I know Miley Cyrus received some “flack” for her champagne Jenny Packham gown, but this young & fresh number is just perfect for her. Let’s be honest, if any of us could wear it, we would–she looked incredible! On the other end of the color spectrum was Carey Mulligan’s Swarovski-encrusted Prada gown. The sweetheart neckline is perfectly complimented by her pixie cut and chandelier earrings. Essentially, the look is girly meets edgy. My personal favorite who got it all right: Rachel McAdams. She had me at The Notebook and this look is a far cry from her breakout role in Mean Girls. Her makeup is  impeccable & her watercolor-organza Elie Saab gown is just incredibly romantic and whimsical.  Who were your favorites?

Oscar Beauty

It was Hollywood’s biggest night & this self-proclaimed fashion junkie nearly had a meltdown when channel 7 vanished right before my eyes. The mere thought of missing Barbara Walters’ Special, the Red Carpet & main event was the trifecta of nightmares (a special thanks to E! for keeping me sane). After hunting (for what seemed like an eternity) for an online live stream (with no luck) someone came to their senses and ABC was back—I think fireworks went off in my living room.

As I settled down in sheer bliss to see my favorite stars strut their stuff, I started my critique…love it, hate it! I’ll share my favorite dress trend in my next post so please stay tuned, but I wanted to first talk about the beauty looks. Let’s face it; these girls would look gorgeous even if they were wearing paper bags. Two refreshing red carpet trends: natural, dewey makeup and pop color pouts.

My favorite creamy & flawless faces were Anna Kendrick, Amanda Seyfried and Zoe Saldana. There’s no better look for these young ladies than radiant skin that reveals their natural beauty. Don’t mean to brag, but Anna was rocking some of my favorite tarte products. After makeup artist Sara Glick prepped her with Arcona’s Magic White Ice hydrating gel, she then topped Anna’s cheeks with tarte’s natural cheek stain in eco-cheek for the perfect flush. For her pretty pink pout, she used a combo of LipSurgence™ natural gel lip stain in charmed & double-ended lipgloss in jake & samantha to enhance her perfect smile! We loved it…your thoughts?

I love a neutral face, but I also admire a pop color pout. Red, Coral, Fuschia whatever your pick—I love them all. I have been experimenting with this look for a few months now (ever since I had our first LipSurgence™ samples in my hand) and I think it’s best paired with a subtle eye (I like lock & roll in rose gold & a thin cat eye with indelible wink liner in black). It’s important to keep the concentration on the lips and play down the rest; this is the Oscar’s not an 80’s concert. Most importantly, when playing with colors have fun & be confident! My go-to lippies for this are tarte’s LipSurgence™ lip stains in amused and lust. Be honest, would you try this?

Stay tuned for more Oscar coverage :)

Gift Guide–For Him!

Whether it’s your father, brother, son, husband or boyfriend, it’s always tough to get that special guy in your life the perfect gift. Most men just don’t light-up in surprise over another new tie, set of cufflinks or sweater the same way us ladies go ga-ga over jewelry, bags & makeup. That being said I’ve tried my very best to bring you a few great gifts for all those guys in your life. I guarantee that he’ll love you even more for them!

1. This is not another button-down. It’s a tailored ‘washed-favorites’ from J-crew. I say if he has to wear one everyday it might as well feel like his favorite tee.
2. From skate shops and Barney’s New York to the pages of Nylon Men, Men’s Journal & GQ, Nixon men’s watches are a must-have! Pick up the Chrono 51-30 (see above) or the rotolog (he’ll thank you for it).
3. John Varvatos Vintage cologne—simply put, he’ll smell amazing!
4. You can’t go wrong with tickets to see his favorite team or band!
5. Nothing beats the sound of his ipod on a BOSE dock. If you’re feeling extra nice, then snag him a pair of high-def headphones, too.
