Filled with soluble and insoluble fiber,  fruits and vegetables are a super fat-burning foods. So fill up on as much as you want of them without  guilt or remorse. Now that second trip to the fruit salad doesn’t sound like a bad idea after all!

I finally finished the cleanse!

For the most part I’m glad I did it and stuck with the six-day plan. Day two was a little hard because my body was craving more sustenance and I really needed to chew on something, so I had a stockpile of vegetables by my side at all times. Day three and four were a little easier because I was adjusting, but near the end of day four I developed a headache that I could not get rid of, no matter how much water I drank. Day five went a little smoother because I knew I was almost done.

The last day I pushed through and felt great. My skin cleared up and I’ve lost 5 ½ pounds (granted this will return when I go back to my normal eating). This cleanse was great because it rid my body of toxins — so I can start eating healthy and fresh for the New Year. Still, I recommend the three day cleanse, but if you have the stamina to do six all the power to ya!

 

 

 

clean start: the Kaeng Raeng cleanse

Ok, it’s a new year and I’ve gone down the list: my room is de-cluttered, my car’s been washed, I cleaned out my makeup bag, and I’m finally financially organized.

While I’m cleaning out my lifestyle, why not cleanse my body as well? After reading a blog called The Kind Life, I decided to rid my body of nasty toxins with a cleanse called Kaeng Raeng –  a nutritional meal replacement detox program.

The cleanse helps to peel off pounds, relieve bloating, improve digestion, boost immunity, enhance energy, and give you that natural glow. It’s totally vegan, gluten free, and caffeine free. It was kind of pricy, but it seemed well worth it. I mean, it is my body.

I’m only on day 2, but so far I feel great. In the past when I’ve attempted a cleanse, I never got past day 1. With this one, all I have to do is drink one meal replacement pouch 3 times a day for 3 or 6 days. I chose 6 days — I’m going all out. I’m also allowed to eat as many raw fruits and vegetables as I want!

Each pouch contains more than a full serving of fruit and fiber, 15g of lean non-GMO protein, 2 billion live probiotic cultures, essential amino acids, and daily vitamins. The drinks don’t taste as bad as I thought they would, I’m actually able to satisfy myself — I wasn’t expecting that. I’ve also lost 3 pounds and noticed that my skin is clearer…and its only day 2!

start the new year off right: your healthy guide to 2012

With Halloween candy, Thanksgiving pies, and Christmas cookies in the past, it’s time to ring in the New Year with some tips to maintain your health in 2012.

Get prepared: Stocking up your kitchen with healthy favorites will eliminate the temptation to eat junk food that could be detrimental to your well-being and your fitness goals. Warm up with a nutritious cup of soup or jumpstart your metabolism with a cleansing cup of green tea. Oh yeah, you may also want to toss what’s left of the holiday candy.

Get moving: Whether you enjoy working up a sweat on a bike, on your feet, or to the beat, there are tons of options to get you off the couch and ready for summer clothes. Group exercise, such as gym classes or joining a running club, is a great way to meet friends who have the same fitness goals in mind. You would be surprised how much fun you can have while burning calories!

Get pumped up: Listening to some upbeat tunes is sure to put you in a good mood. Whether taking a Zumba class or hitting the clubs, hearing chart topping tunes by Rihanna, Pitbull, or Flo Rida are sure to give you a “Good Feeling.”

Get de-stressed: Yoga and meditation are stress relieving activities that benefit the mind and body. Taking even just five minutes a day to focus on your breathing and clear your mind will help you let go of any stressful thoughts. Regular practice of these techniques can change the way you relate to yourself and others, making your relationships stronger and more fulfilling.

Get some rest: After a busy day at work or at home, sleep is essential for replenishing energy, reducing stress, and maintaining a healthy weight. Make a New Year’s resolution to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night – your body will thank you!

Take these tips, make them part of your daily routine, and 2012 will be your best year yet!

Jen’s Pick: Vegan Cookies!

As a lover of all things natural and great-for-you good, once I bit into these amazing oatmeal cookies I knew I had to spread the word and share the recipe. They’re a vegan, egg-free and dairy-free version of classic oatmeal raisin cookies with the same classic taste! Even if you’re not a vegan, you should definitely give them a try – trust me on this, you’ll thank me later.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup margarine (make sure it’s vegan!)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup soy milk
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp cloves
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 3 cups rolled or quick cooking oatmeal

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Mix the sugar, brown sugar, vegan margarine and vanilla until smooth and fluffy, then add soy milk into the mix.

Add the flour, baking soda, salt and spices, and stir until well mixed. Add the remaining ingredients. Batter should be a thick consistency.  Feel free to sneak a couple bites because salmonella is no issue here!

Drop by 3 inch balls onto cookie sheet and flatten slightly. Bake 12-15 minutes, or until done.

Pour a big glass of soy milk and enjoy your delicious chewy vegan oatmeal raisin cookies!
